If Dempsey gets into the position he got into with Firpo, he does not beat the count. Say what you will about Bonecrusher's science, Firpo's flailing makes him look like Benny Leonard.
Firpo kept getting up and trying to ko Dempsey right to the end, we've never seen Smith have the same attitude he was a good on top fighter but when hurt he closed up shop ala Tyson.
Firpo wasn't looking at Tyson across the ring in that fight. He was looking at a guy who wasn't staying on form and seemed to think the fight was in the bag. Firpo isn't making it out of the first round against Tyson.
Dempsey should outpoint him but would have to be careful not to punch himself out or to go kamikaze if hit and hurt like he did v.s. Firpo .. Bonecrusher was a big puncher , took a terrific shot for most of his career and had stamina ..
Dempsey was, by modern standards, a smallish cruiserweight with very little boxing ability. He had no jab, couldn't cut off the ring, left himself open for counters coming in. He was very predictable and had no plan B. I think numerous light heavyweights and super middleweights today and in previous eras would beat him or give him hell. Smith was much bigger and at least knew the rudimentary basics of boxing.
Why didn't they then? Smith was a one dimensional reluctant bomber who lost his appetite for the fray when put under pressuure.
I am not a Jack Dempsey fan, but I think he blasts Smith out with a mid round KO. Smith was slow of hand and foot, and had leaky defense. I think Dempsey would use him as a big punching bag, weaving in and underneath Smiths haymakers and ripping crushing left hooks into Smith's head. Dempsey was a great finisher, and would get the normally durable Smith out of there.
Another consideration would be their respective ages when active, as Dempsey by age of 31 had lost the title wheras Bonecrusher did not even turn pro until age 28. I think Bonecrusher vs Dempsey at the same age of 31, would be a interesting matchup, and not a forgone conclusion regarding Dempsey winning. Ah well another fantasy matchup to discuss over a few glasses of 'falling down water'.
