Tyson based his whole style on Dempsey, so you could argue, Dempsey was the original prototype

Pretty much what he did with Tyson? before utilising his tremendous octopus skills to hug and clinch whenever he could and be glad he made it to the final bell. What caused Smith to run in cowardice against this 'midget'? was it his speed, power, aggression? if so, Dempsey has that in spades.

If hes braver, he also leaves himself more open and Dempsey only needs a few openings.

But Bonecrusher Smith isnt Gene Tunney is he? Hes James Smith, the guy who will be known for providing one of the stinkiest bouts in modern memory

Boneclutcher would be too slow and reluctant for the explosive fighting style of Dempsey. It could turn out to be a massacre.

If Marvis Frazier can outwork Smith,a prime Dempsey would be capable of doing that...............and more !

Bonecrusher was a big and strong man with good punching power in both hands but he took several ass whippings even before he was washed up. 6'4" with an 82" reach and a solid 225 Lbs in his prime. He was stopped by James Broad (who was 2-0) in his pro debut (LKOby4). He won his next 14, 12 by KO including a 10th round KO of Frank Bruno (who was 21-0 going into the fight). Other than Bruno he hadn't beat anyone of note except for the 2-0 Ricky Parkey who woudl go on to win a CW world title belt and lose it to Evander Holyfield. He was stopped in teh 12th round by Larry Holmes in 1984. He was outpointed by Tony Tubbs, he beat Jose Ribalta by SD, he lost nearly every round to Tim Witherspoon in their first fight, he lost a close decision to Marvis Frazier, he stopped Mike Weaver in the 1st round, beat Jesse Ferguson by MD, beat David Bey, then he stopped Tim Witherspoon in the 1st round. He didn't win a fight for nearly 3 years after this. He lost a clear decision to Mike Tyson, a SD to Adilson Rodrigues, and was stopped in the 7th round by Razor Ruddock (he did drop Ruddock early).

Dempsey was much smaller at 6'1" with a 77" reach and about 190 Lbs. Smith was no Lewis, Bowe, or Klitschko though. Smith would give Demspey problems but I think Demspey would eventually find a way to win, either by decision or late round KO.
