Two top prospects fighting eachother in just their 10-12 fights is unheard of in todays boxing, and to be honest this fight in a financial point of view should of happened when they were both established worldclass boxers. Now Degale has a loss on his record in just his eleventh fight, which won't do much harm to his boxing, but in promotion sense, it's a huge setback. The problem is Degale now wants a rematch, which i don't think he's going to get for a few years now, but these guys are going to have a few wars now so early into their careers. I can see them having about three-four fights against eachother, and every single one of them are going to be tough fights.

I think both camps should of just waited for this fight. Groves will now go his way ignoring Degales rematch demands, which i don't blame him for, and Degale will now have to do the chasing.

Degale is really bitter about Groves, and it's even worse because not only has groves beat him in the amateurs, but now also as a pro.

Frank warren must be regretting doing this fight now.

To be honest, I prefer this, least your getting a competitive fight, not an old guy with a great name, against a great fighter who's at the top of his game, or a great fighter consciously picking styles that cooperates with his in order to keep him on the win trail, least we dont have to put up the diva ways of some the established fighters wrangling for the thicker end of the financial package.

Off subject, but why was George called the 'Bitter rival' when they were announcing the fighters?

More like the other bloody way round.

What a surprise, another DeGale fanboy crying that his man got beaten. Get over it.

Not crying at all, actually i couldn't be happier that Groves won, but what i'm actually getting at is Groves is already getting in very tough fights even though he is very young and his career has just begun. I would say it's a needless fight at this point of their career because now you've got a rivalry that will need 3-4 fights, and it's way too early for that.

I dont really care how the fight is packaged, in terms of whether it makes money, garners more interest, cause it might not be as competitive. Groves probably wont improve that much, but De Gale will, so its conceivable he would of had a better shot at beating Groves down the line, this rendering it a more non competitive fight.

Its about whats in the package, not how its packaged.

Degale was the one that wrote on paper to tell the announcer what to say, and i agree, it's the other way round, and always has been. Degale has been the one pushing for this fight the most and that's because he's bitter about his amateur loss, and now he's lost again. Another loss to Groves could destroy him. If i was Frank i would'nt be putting Degale against Groves for a little while, and if i was Booth i would be frustrating Warren and Degale by ignoring their rematch demands. **** them would be my feelings if i was Booth and Groves.

who's to say Groves won't improve? He's younger than Degale.

He will improve, although I dont think that significantly. Groves has too many fundamental issues technically, to ever excell, he will always be a good to decent fighter though, and probably capable of winning an ABC title.

De Gale has a higher ceiling than Groves imo, despite the loss.

No fúck off, it's this mentality that keeps fights like Ward v Dirrell, Bradley v Alexander (for the best part of two years) from happening. Two unbeaten prospects fighting each other always makes for interesting viewing. What is more interesting now that Groves and DeGale have fought is that they could both go down different paths and meet later in their careers at a higher level and have another one or two fights for bigger honours. Fúck waiting for them to fight another 10 bums or so, the fight happened at the right time and was great to watch.

Couldnt agree less with this thread.

Boxing should be sink or swim for EVERYBODY. This fight SHOULD have happened.
As a fighter you should be prepared to fight ANYBODY whenever!

Agreed, Degale is a great prospect but I dont think he will change much physically. George is very very young for a super middle (most peak in the early 30s) and looks to have a physique that he can grow into.

Still think Degale will ultimately achieve better things, but he can no longer just dismiss groves as being not on his level

    Yep

He has also come through very tough fights and bad moments

Adapted his style for a fight and executed a plan

He's shown far more than degale as a pro

Chances are if Groves continues to have tough fights, he won't have a career that lasts too long.

Very good post and one of the things I was thinking before the fight was made that it is very early a fight to be made and could ruin one of the fighters, promotionally, but I dont think thats a problem now, with how the fight turned out, in fact for British boxing fans it has turned out well I think. It was a close fight that many saw and both fighters havent been completely beaten or ruined. It was a tough skilled fight.
I think both should look to move on fast now. Maybe both have an easier fight and then move onwards.
I wouldnt be too shocked if Warren took DeGale down the international route now and Groves goes down the traditional route by going after the European title
