James Degale has the potential to be our best ever.

I think he can box the fighters and fight the boxers, whether he chooses to or not is another thing. are you saying he couldnt have mixed it up with abrham if hed had to. he can box and fight, how cant he adapt? im not on his nuts, just think hes got legendary status in his grasp within 3-4 fights. dirrel came to survive and nick a victory, hard to look good in those circumstances. kessler fight he done himself proud in a war, and i feel would have won a rematch in britain. froch wasnt physically 100% that nght and that affected him mentally i feel.

you may be right but there are facets to his game that give him options? when has degale shown he can adapt? i feel he has been able to implement the same style and strategy in all his fights so far.

 

I think some people are getting ahead of themselves. Lets just see how he looks in his next fight which hopefully won't be to long away from now.

 

yeah but when has he had to turn a fight around and adapt, this is not proven yet imo. he has all the right moves like i said, and he has showcased those moves with the opposition he has faced.

I must say Degale's looked very impressive so far and was brillient against Smith. The biggest thing i look out for in a fighters career at this stage is how much they're getting hit...i think you can tell a lot about a young fighters potential by how hard/easy they are to hit at this stage in their development. Obviously the styles and opposition play a big part, but generally it's a good indicator.

Degale's defense looks sound. He can slip, ride or block a punch and fight off the ropes. Love how he tucks his chin under his shoulder and he looks to have good anticipation, which is the most underrated quality in a fighter and key to being elusive. He also pivots really well (don't know why the refs have been pulling him up on turning his opponent, very harsh).

He's not relient on one area and boxes in tight circles (something Amir Khan could learn from). One thing that's gonna give a lot of people problems is, he throws punches that travel around and under people's direct line of sight, even though they look like arm punches at times they're very difficult to see.

I've noticed he doesn't close his fist and leaves it open for long periods. This is actually not bad for defense and to block looping punches, but he needs to close it at the point of contact when he throws, otherwise he won't get snap on his punches. He also needs to stop with all that switch hitting BS because he'll just end up confusing himself as he moves up in levels. He switches at the wrong times as well, like when he's on the defensive, under pressure or near the ropes and it's not a good look.

He's a work in progress who doesn't quite "know" himself at the moment, i don't wonna anoint him just yet and his level of dedication will be the big factor, but the kid looks class and has a lot of tools. I just wish he was kept a little more active.
