James DeGale is the total package, but also a bit dirty

Smith hit home on the break numerous times and never got a warning. All DeGale did was use his forearm early and hit Smith behind the head with his left and hit him with a right uppercut to the body when he was boxing orthodox [which the referee didn't call incidently].

I didn't see much besides that, heads clashed on the insde and they were doing so a lot but you expect that when you've got a southpaw against a tenacious orthodox fighter looking to bang it out inside.

How can you possibly talk about James Degale been the whole package,Paul Smith might have been a british champion but he is hardly world class.

    It's foresight.

I think people overestimate the difference between world class fighters and a special prospect. Realistically, you could have put Roy Jones in with the elite before he had 10 fights and he wouldn't get blown away. Same with Mayweather and many others. I'm not saying every future world champion can do this because they can't. However, I think DeGale could and deserves the type of recognition BigBone is giving him. Not only is he looking very impressive as a pro, he was a fantastic amateur and is progressing at a very fast rate.

Like I said in another thread, the biggest danger for DeGale is he is matched too softly. Warren could put him in with the best at 168lbs and not one would totally outclass him. I think Ward, Bute, Kessler, Froch etc., would win, but there are still winnable fights for him, against top 10 super middles. Against Dirrell, Stieglitz and Andrade, I would favour DeGale.

I was very impressed with DeGale, firstly for taking a fight like this so early in his career and, secondly, for completely out-classing a good, domestic-level fighter. He showed he's already above that level.

I didn't think he was overly dirty - if anything, you could see it as a positive that someone so inexperienced knows a few tricks and isn't going to be bullied easily.

I still can't bring myself to like DeGale but he certainly looks like the real deal.

De Gale has the potential to go all the way - but it is still potential. He dosn't need the pressure just yet with people over hyping him - but given his gold medal it inevitably will come. Here goes - a World strap holder in 2012 - no doubt - Haha. He's around the top 20 in the world and has only fought 9 times. He has a bright future. Seriously he did a great job on Saturday - not forgetting he went to Liverpool (Smiths home city) and did the job. He looked very impressive and was a class above Smith (who was top ten for the WBO before the fight). He can rough it too and is a bit dirty - but good for him.

didnt see that much foul play to be honest. he just looked world class to me. he's got more talent than andre ward. he's more skillfull with better variety. not saying he's a better fighter yet though but i believe he will be. the guy has the best skills ive seen in a while from any prospect!

Okay, toned down the critique a bit in the opening post, but I think these tactics should be pointed out as long as he's using them. Some tricks on the inside are more or less necessary for effectiveness, but holding the head and hitting for one is not to be tolerated, and you know, it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Plenty of boxing skills to win fights, he should stick to them.

Anyway, 2 gifs showing some of his excellent moves and the finish

was very impressed with De Gale I loved his inside work - attack and defence and those left hooks were beauties, especially the one off the ropes that really set up the finish.

Other than Groves there is no one domestically that can really challenge him - minus Froch.

may have to go up to international and European level within the year unless he intends to win the Lonsdale belt outright!
