Toney had experience as a CW and beat the best CW in Jirov in an exciting fight as an underdog! Moved up and stopped Holyfield, but his Defensive skills is what bailed him out against guys like Peter's and Ruiz who he beat, but failed a drug test too. Jones and toney were excellent fighters who used their skills all around to beat Heavyweights while still being relevant. Would have loved to see Klitschko vs Toney around 2004-2008...
Not that it changes the point at all but I thought it was 154-168 he said? Or has Sanchez been let near the mic again recently?
Recently there was talks from able that GGG would knock out the 175 pounders... so....we got to hold them to their word. 15 pounds is realistic.
One of my favourite fighters of all times. The greates inside fighter&defensive fighter I've witnessed in my lifetime. And could've been one of the greatests from MW to CW if he kept his **** together.
Absolutely. Toney was gifted, no doubt about it. But I thought HW WAS too much despite his success there.
I agree, as I said It wasn't a smart idea considering his recent conditioning. He's been punch drunk since he went those 24 rounds with Sam Peter.
If he was prepared to enter the ring at 175, not much would have to change to be honest. What's he weigh on fight night now do you think?
I had the oppurtunity to meet Toney back in 2008 when he was the mando for one of the klitchkos, maybe Wlad at that time and he was avoided.. i rememebwr asking him the question, and it set him iff on a rant... "Im the Best" "klitchko doesnt want to fight" lol.. ...Toney was a real threat at HW in those years.
It's funny how in modern boxing we have come to accept boxers will be 10-15llbs above the weight limit when they fight. I like the IBF rule and if anything I'd say it should be more stringent than 10llbs. Boxers shouldn't be rewarded for how much their bodies let them re-hydrate. Some can do this to greater extreme than others and as we know weight is a huge factor in fights...
Good point, I agree in full. If you can make your weight class and do it without risking much while being healthy to fight. Why not? But at a certain point, most fighters make the decision to move up and reach for greatness. This is a new era. This is not Hagler position where there's no SMW division to move upto.
