In fairness I think he picked the wrong trainer. McDonnell can get guys super fit (except for Williams) but in terms of adapting a top amateur guy to the pros I just don't think he's up to it.

 

Totally underwhelmed by DeGale last night.

 

DeGale was average at best last night. However his opponent was not helping at all, DeGale caught him with a decent shot in the first round when his opponent attacked and opened up, once this happened he stayed within his shell until the last round.

One thing that I can say is that he seems to have a good mentality, he didn't let the crowd, occasion, or how well the other olympians get to him and went out there and did a job.

However this does not stop his performance from being the worst of all the olympic debuts so far this year.

 

Simply, he had his first pro fight, he won.

The same people saying the Amatuer to Pros is night and day ( correct ) are questioning his ablity after one fight as a Pro.

Sorry, they dont seem to impressed yet they werent before either when he was an amatuer :rofl

 

His opponent threw 2 punches, defending defending defending, hard to look good.

 

His opponent threw an average of about 15 punches a round and half of them came in the last round.

 

Punched with the back of the hand, front of the hand, patted the opponent on the top of the head, left his chin out to dry etc.

This is a shot in the dark, but stamina may be an issue...seemed to pace himself way too much.

By far the worst of the debutants, but there is still potential there and I feel he needs to go away and work on a few things. He can still come good.

 

The worst thing about the whole thing was dedicating the victory to Jade Goody...

 

Yeah, I hope he's not going to do an Amir Khan style celebrity drive. Eubank made some pretty good points about that.

Overall he looked very amatuerish to me. His jab had no solidarity, like it was just there for measuring distance or getting a combo going. When he has his opponent bunch up against the ropes he kept doing silly light flurries with his arms left out instead of picking effective punches.

Power just wasn't a consideration - either dishing out his own or dealing with his opponents. Reactions decent but not quite sharp enough to pull off a hands down, lean away type of defence that he seems to be want to try. I just got the impression an aggressive, reasonably powerfull opponent could have charged right through his style.

He looks like he's got a physique that should generate more power than he's shown so far so lets see how he adapts.

One thing I liked was his reaction at the end. Obviously upset by the boos but stopped short of a full on paddy. Seemed to understand he would have to deal with these things.

 

The way that he threw rights to the body was quite comedic. He stepped in, threw but seemed to pull the punch on impact then stepped back with his right in the air to admire his work. If he carries on like that some journeyman will spark him.

 

I don't know what Nelson and Piper were smoking the other night because they seemed very impressed.

Degale won't go that far IMO and he will never be a fan favourite. Doesn't exactly help his cause that he is a complete wanker also.

 

More impressed with Tony Jeffries and Darren Sutherland - De Gale in the pros cant live with these two ! - and agreed he does seem a smug git ....

 

he should keep his talking for the ring, i hope i'm wrong, but i smell an audrey harrison part deux lol
