What a shame Darren Sutherland isnt about these 2 would of have to have had a fight by now and add into the mix Groves the division when they first turned pro looked a great 1 but sadly with the Dazzlers death its only Groves and I hope the 2 get it on and fight this year. Groves will be a great test for DeGale
In the NOTW this morning so it definitely won't happen. Degale is quality, he could win this, make some good learning defences (Miranda has been mentioned as interesting posters before, Magee, Allan Green?) and using te WBA title as a springboard to fights he wouldn't otherwise get. This could be a good thing, regardless of him not attaining 'World champ' status with this win, he would thrust himself into the top 15-11 fighters in the division. I would love it of Warren could make this a possibility, gifted prospects should be given tests if they are already above domestic level, and riskier promoting is the way forward.
If it is true, I believe he is ready. But, if it came a few fights down the line he would be "more" ready.
If this fight happens and DeGale picks up a pretend belt like this, I think I might just give up on boxing and James DeGale. James has genuine potential as a boxer and it should not be wasted by pretending to be a champion like this. He already has marketability, he has skills that put him a level above domestic class right now but he needs to win the British title outright before he starts parading around as a 'world champion'. All decent, proper world class boxers should give up on the WBA as well. They are a genuine **** take.
I don't like this fight for two reasons, firstly it is for a bs fake title which I would hate to have to have paraded around as being genuine. And secondly this is yet another step up and although Degale has the talent to beat Sartisan how about after that. If you go through history I cannot think of many fighters that won a title very early on in their career that managed to really build on winning a title, they tend to get found out due to their lack of apprenticeship in the early days of their career and they tend to fizzle out pretty quickly.
If Groves can't be made, Magee is tied up with Bute. Who else is there for him that wouldn't be a backward step? I'd quite like to see him face Brinkley (guy who bute just smashed up). If he can look as impressive as the Canadian did, then a world title shot should be within his grasp this year
It's a winnable fight for him. He's just dominated and stopped a decent British champion.... hardly taking a punch in doing so either. Stick him in, no point hanging around at domestic level if the Groves fight can't be made. Strange how Allegedly is willing to consider these sorts of fights for DeGale yet with Burns we've seen challengers that even the WBU might reject.
i dont think its that, the way i see it (and if rumours are true) he has proberly made a more significant invest in Defannygale than burns and will be looking to recoup that investment quickly ...
I think we'll see at least 2 more domestic/ Euro level fights before something like this comes off. At the post fight presser Degale asked Warren if he now had Smiths world ranking spot, Warren just replied something like "Don't worry about that just yet". Warren knows what Smith is (which is why he matched Degale-Smith in the first place) and won't be getting too carried away with his mealticket on the back of that fight.
