I love all the recent references to the WBU lol if we keep talking about it its going to turn into a legitimate title. I dont mind his fight and i wouldnt mind if Degale used it to fight some decent international opposition for a few fights. I have a suspicion that Degale wouldnt be parading himself as world champion either because he knows that Ward Froch etc are the real championship level at SMW i think he would be pretty honest about the levels.
My concern is, that after 2 years and 9 fights, even if DeGale can win a title he has nowhere near the experience to keep hold of it when he really steps up. He should be 15/16-0 by now and having fought a reasonable blend of styles. In stead he's 9-0 and has had everything his own way in every fight. You can argue that thats a positive because it means he's that good but I think its inadequate preparation for what should be lying ahead.
well i guess even if he does fight sartisan for the fake wba title, he won't have to step up to genuine world class for a while. he should still be able to fight gatekeeper level opponents for a while until he is ready to step up. the WBA won't mind as long as they get their sanctioning fees
That's what I think as well he has been fighting the same styles so far and if he steps up too soon even if he has success early he will be looking at failure down the road. I wouldn't mind seeing him against Paul David, yes that is a backward step from Paul Smith or George Groves. But he is a Ingle fighter and he is awkward so that for me would be a good style for him to go up against and learn from.
Good point, his first title defense will probably be to James Obode Toney or George Tahdooahnippah and he won't be allowed anywhere near Carl Froch as long as he isn't a Frank Warren fighter.
Degale in my opinion should try and get the groves fight made as he would be a big favourite in that and if magee were to lose to bute, that fight could possibly be made after. If he won them 2, he'd have absolutely nothing left at domestic or even european level and should look for some sort of 'world' belt
Frank himself has said before that it's no good getting a fighter a title, it's making sure they hold on to it :yep Too early this, looking at the WBA rankings Dirrell is at 2 and Pavlik at 3. Once Dirrell's "condition" clears up he'll be going for a title. I'm sure Pavlik will be looking to get a title as well when he sorts things out. DeGale should fight 5/6 times this year against the likes of Groves, post Bute Magee, Mock, Miranda, Berrio. Asikainen is fighting a Polish guy for the Euro title - try and get hold of that.
If the fight is there to make I'd say make it. Sartison is better than Smith by a long way but still highly beatable. Kessler dominated every round except for the knockdown. There is nobody too scary thats going to come knocking on the door. Everyone worth a **** is tied up.
My line of fights would be Mock or David, Asikainen and in the fall Groves for all the domestic titles. I really do think that Mock would be the perfect litmus test for Degale. Mock has been in with god knows how many top tier fighters, he never gets stopped and he is on a good run of form. Sure he doesn't sell tickets and he won't sell a PPV but that is not what it is about at this stage of Degale's career it's about progression and nobody could offer him that better than Lolenga Mock.
Why does every go on about Paul David? He's lost 5 fights, what am I missing? It's a huge step back. He needs fights on the same level or better.
