James Degale vs Dmitriy Sartisan March 19th

The other thing that amuses me is apparently this WBO title is such a poisoned chalice yet Stieglitz's last 3 fights read Ruben Acosta, Eduard Gutknecht and Enrique Ornelas. Not once has he been rumored to fight anyone too out of line.

 

I agree he's not ready for the elite guys, but he'll be 25 in a few weeks so he's old enough to go for a weaker champ imo. What better way to ramp up the opposition than title defenses? Could be some big fights for him until he's ready for a real top dog. He has potential tough and very sellable fights versus Magee, Brinkley, Miranda and Andrade that he can work his way through.

 

I think theres enough decent options out there, like the ones mentioned in this thread, for progressive and learning fights without Degale getting tied up with a belt he may not be up to defending....

Lets be honest though, we're probably looking at 2 fights at domestic/ Euro level before any of these fights happen whether it be Brinkley, Stieglitz, Sartisan, Ornelas or whoever in the autumn or winter.

Well he's not scared of getting rough but reallistically this is way to much risk for very little return.Someone like Allan Green would be perfect it would be an easy night for DeGale but would boost his profile stateside.

what happened to degale v groves,both are going off and fighting in march vs other opponents,when theres a massive british showdown to attend to!.

this fight better happen this year.

 

I think that Ward, Bute and Froch will have probably moved up to Light Heavy by then.

 

Just read in Boxing Monthly that he thinks Ugly Kid is next.

It's The best fight out there for both at the minute. Unless Groves ditches Adam Weird Energy Man he's not going past domestic level so the thought of trying to build this one is moot.

 

Good power , strange angles, tones of experience , won the early rounds against Bute and Ward , troubled Calzaghe. Bad career choice, huge risk low reword. He should stay away from Bika and Andrade. Go for Sartison or Stieglitz , they are beatable, and have a belt. He can win the WBO 4th belt as recognition , or the bogus WBA regular title who might help him later if , for example Froch wins the s6 and vacates his SMW belts going to LHW. Also a Jesse Brinkley , Jean Paul Mendy , Karoly Balzsay , Allan Green would be good opponents to get him tested and gaining some experience.

 

He fights this guy, wins, faces a real threat like Sturm and loses. What is the big deal? He'll learn more from that then beating on some randoms.

Haye and Khan improved much more from their losses. A win keeps you believing in the hype. A loss makes you re-assess.

 

That doesn't mean that Warren is going to plan Degales career around getting beat. People say "he can come back from the loss" or "he'll learn from the loss" but thats not how promoters look at it.

Both Haye and Khan were expected to beat Thompson and Prescott, their promoters wern't matching them in fights they expected their guy to lose as a learning experience.

 

Sturm is a middleweight.

Shumenov looks basic as ****, a good amateur who has competed fairly decently with only a few fights. 168 is tougher than 175 currently, but Degale could use the useless trinket as a springboard to competitive, but not completely horrific, defences.

Once he's ready, say at 15-0, he fights for the 'full' title lol and he will have already had some fights against increasingly decent fringe contenders to prepare him.

I mean, Inkin, Balzay, Green, Miranda (massive puncher though) Ornelas, Stieglitz, Oganov, all have defects a young and aspiring fighter like Degale should be able to exploit. He's clearly above domestic level, and these guys are essentially the next tier.

Get him in now; if he loses, so what? He can learn more from a loss against a guy like that than beating 30 no hopers. If he loses and he doesn't learn then **** him, he never would've went anywhere anyways.

I mean, why are we even questioning this??? Do we want to breed a whole team of Kevin Mitchells?

 

You're asking Warren to change the habit of a lifetime.....

Sorry to bang on about the number of fights but to saying "it doesn't matter if he loses, he'll learn" is a good attitude to take on the way up when a boxer is fighting 8/10 times a year. Lose, then get back on the horse a wiser fighter but its a harder call when the loss is one of only 2 or 3 fights the guy will have that year. Thats why these fighters are matched a lot more carefully these days.

"James DeGale, unbeaten Olympic champion" has a better selling angle than "James Degage, exposed but learning".....;O)

 

True, but he seems to be changing his mind with Degale. He's going for Sartison, went for Smith quickly, these are massive steps up for a guy, on paper, who is '9-0'.

He needs stars, quick. Clev doesn't seem to have caught on with the public (mainly because he looks an utter ponce IMO) Mitchell got battered (and was hardly an engaging personality) and Bellew has the engaging personality but is miles off headlining big shows (and sadly might never get there)

Degale is well known, an Olympic Gold medallist (even though that means **** all in terms of actual professional ability nowadays, he might as well be 'World Fencing Champion') has an electric personality, divides opinion, looks the part (no homo) and has a crowd pleasing style (flashy)

He might just give this kid a real push. If he takes on a complete stiff after Sartison I wouldn't be too disappointed, I'm sure it wouldn't go on long.

For example, Frank clearly has litle faith in Ricky Burns, but knows he can make him some wonga, hence two shocking defences in a row.

Can't see that being the case with Degale, he'll just do a Khan and **** off, this guy has aspirations by the looks of it.
