James J Corbett was well known to have been trained in physical culture under the tutelage of Professor Atila (Ludwig Durlarcher) unknown to the commons the orignal farther of Bodybuilding and inventor of the light dumbell system both things his student Eugene Sandow took glory for or was accredited to. James J Corbett frequented his gym for personal trainning sessions and in all likelihood he was present in James's camps for his weightlifting trainning. Does anyone know the content of he and Atilas trainning sessions? Also curios is the dismissal of Weights still being present despite one of the earliest champions partaking.
For those into strength and speed feats of sports pre modern training and PED's, I recommend the book, The Super-Athletes by David P. Willoughby Those interested in old time training methods will love this book. It's got quite a bit on boxing too.
In his biography, Rocky Marciano tried weight lifting for a while but someone told him it would make him too slow and stiff so he abandoned it. 60's boxers such as Ali felt the same way. We didn't really start seeing too many modern fighters start getting jacked and incorporating heavy lifting into their boxing training until guys like Mike Weaver and Frank Bruno. Shane Mosley used to bench press and boast about his numbers.
