Was speaking to a friend about Corbett and how I overrated he was before this came up, and I thought it would have some lovely debates. What say you?
wtf imagine. It's a question about whether or not boxing has evolved. But there's nothing here about rules. When you're arguing evolution you need to know: skin gloves? Forty round fight? 4 oz horsehair? 2020 pillows? 2020 referee? 1890 butcher? Are they fighting in a modern ring in an air-conditioned building or in a barn where three ropes are strung by one of the barn walls which forms the fourth rope? On a barge? Police lookouts or no police lookouts? This one's quite well pitched though. Presumably people know and understand that Corbett would beat Masayuki Kuroda even under modern rules. So there's a tipping point even for fierce modernists.
Are you dissing manly Masayuki? And yes, rule-set specifics are Paramount for these matches. Got some @KeedCubano?
Corbett to me, even though he's usually overrated he was very talented fighter with some nice wins on his resume.
I am in the camp that sees Corbett as being over rated, but I still have to favor him here. Froch would probably need a knockout to win, and he probably isn't quite enough of a finisher to put Corbett away.
Froch had a great chin and a very good right hand ,but he was pretty average as regards skills, and not that quick. Corbett would be the bigger man here and the more skilled,he takes a clear decision .
Other than great footwork, I don't really see Corbett as being exceptionally skilled. Of the (admittedly) limited footage I have seen, I'm not overly impressed! I'm thinking that Froch would catch him sooner or later for a stoppage win.
The problem is that Corbett wasn't easy to stop. He wasn't stopped until he faced Fitzsimmons (one of the best punchers ever) and he lasted 14 rounds with him. He got stopped after that but never quickly and he was past his prime after Fitz loss.
Ruleset will determine the degree of the outcome but not the outcome. I think Froch catches him within 6, likely much sooner than that. Corbett has no advantages here.
