The funny thing is that Gibbons was actually one of Dempsey's best career performances. Gibbons was an exceptional fighter if a small heavyweight. He gave Greb many of his toughest fights and had never been stopped. He was very cagey and a defensive marvel, very much a better conditioned James Toney of his day. For Dempsey to come back after yet another long layoff and pretty much dominate Gibbons over 15 rounds to me says a lot about how great Dempsey could have actually been.

Jeffries , a huge question mark, was at least very strong and well conditioned. I feel a properly conditioned Dempsey simply beats him up over a 15 round decision or possible a later round stopage. I don't see Dempsey losing his punch as he showed by crushing Brennen in the 12th in their bout at the Garden. I see Jack as much quicker, able to get off much quicker and inflict enough damage that Jeffries never catches up. However, if out of character Jeffries attacks and makes an early brawl out of it who knows ?

So, this fight is scheduled for 45 rounds. I'm keeping my $1000 in my pocket. I'll just sit back and enjoy this one. :bbb

Yes i would say so. Maybe he was better when he was padding his record, but there's no way of knowing that. And it would've been essential to fill out his 175lbs frame completely before facing the HW champ.

Just as much as you're a closet Vitali Klitschko fan. ;)

I love Dempsey. I just feel cheated by him because of inactivity and not fighting Wills and Greb. I feel Dempsey had the skills to possibly back up his legend but underachieved and it sucks.

Gibbons at 32 was likely just starting to slide but he was still very active and that kept him sharp opposed to fighters that are inactive and lose skills that never return.

Gibbons himself fancied that he had lost a little for whatever that is worth.

I think the first comment is pretty good. I would add that Jeffries, though not as slow as he is often depicted, is still not fast enough to deal effectively with Dempsey's speed and aggressiveness early. If he can absorb punishment, then he's in the fight.

The second comment I can't agree with. I think Louis destroys Dempsey. Dempsey would walk into a lot of punches. Joe Louis is a massive hitter.

interesting analysis in contrast to syles, However I see Dempsey as a strong obstacle to Louis and Louis may hit the floor but I think he overcomes to win by stop in a wicked war

I would imagine most people would pick Louis over Dempsey ,he is the more complete fighter imo.
I just feel that Dempsey would rush out and begin an avalanche of punches that would get Louis out of there before he had even begun his fight, if the fight went over 6 rds my pick would change,as I feel Louis' jab would begin to find Dempsey, and break up his attacks.
I cant argue with anyone picking Louis he was perhaps the best heavyweight of all time, but I give Dempsey the edge on movement, elusiveness ,chin and parity on power. :good

Reports of the second Fitz fight state that Jeffries only won because of his huge advantage in strength, size ,and youth.

For the second time [excluding his comeback,] he would be facing a top heavyweight who was in his prime. Sharkey was greatly outweighed and outsized by Jeffries, yet finished on his feet after 45rds .

I discount Ruhlin because he had been absolutely hammered by Fitzsimmons previously and spent two weeks in bed after their fight ,blood coming out of his ears etc.The Doctor stayed with him the first night lest he succumb to his injuries .
I think Fitz finished him at top level.

This might come down to the referee, if Jeffries ships enough punishment the third man may have to rescue him.
I see Dempsey as faster , harder hitting, more elusive, and definitely more explosive .
Jeffrires more durable but Dempsey had a top chin, and several of Jeffries fights might have been stopped in later years.

And Dempsey isnt? Louis was on the floor from left hooks thrown by slower fighters than Dempsey, lumbering Buddy Baer and slow as mollasses Galento, Dempsey's pet punch was the short left hook .

45 rounds, I'm going with Jeffries, could be mistaken.

15 rounds, I'd pick Dempsey to outhustle Jeff, but very weary at the end.
