You raise a important point regarding the how quick/fast Jeffries was , more than one poster has referred to him as slow, and in djanders case also a slow starter, not sure how he knows that, then again he is a learned poster so I will take him at his word.
Personally I would have thought the writings of his peers would carry more weight, this from Sharkey " he was as strong as an ox, but also cat like quick " and from Corbett " for a big strong man weighing 225 lb his speed around the ring was something to behold " so according to the men that actually fought him ( big in my world ) he was far from big and slow, quite the contrary.
    stay safe guys.

DJ Sanders knows because remember that locked cellar that Jeffries offered to fight Johnson in, & whoever emerged wins?
Our man took him up on it-& toyed with The Boliernaker for 50 minutes straight before putting him out of his misery.

From the little we can see of him against Ruhlin he doesn't look speedy in fact Ruhlin looks quicker.

@djanders offered Jeff a similar deal to what Ali's group offered D1ck Tiger.

He'd only use his left hand, Jeff promptly refused knowing what would happen.

One thing about the 1902 Fitz fight, though.

Supposedly Fitz loaded his gloves for that one. If that is true and why and how he cut up Jeff, it certainly fogs the issue. If Jeff could stand up to loaded gloves from a puncher like Fitz, he possibly could survive Dempsey.

Jeff endured in that fight although he ended up looking like he fell face first into a silage blower. The man must have been super tough in his prime.

    Food for thought, anyway.

Sure and I said that it is easier to look fast when you run away from your opponent.

It's easier to move faster going forwards rather than backwards.I'd say that was basic physics .

Seems a bit like saying Foreman looked slower than Joe Frazier in their fight.

Difference being Foreman was not moving, he was stationary waiting for Frazier to come in and be thumped. So no comparison ,or indeed relevance to Jeffries v Ruhlin.
