Douglas by unanimous decision.Easy fight:good

 

Tokyo Douglas is the most overrated fighter ever. There is a reason why Douglas looked that good in only one fight in his entire career, and that is a woefully unprepared Tyson, who was slow, no footwork, no defense, no combinations, very low punch output. There are a lot of guys who would have looked that good against Tyson if he had not trained properly for them. The funny thing is that even Tyson at his worst still almost stopped him. Jeffries via late rounds KO.

In reality Jeffries would be a very tough guy for Douglas to stop but he might stay ahead of him and snatch a points win if he brings his A game. Corbett nearly did and that was over a longer distance.

 

And yet Tyson started so brightly. He did use head movement to begin with but became more puzzled as it went on. with the same corner as the Bruno fight Mike appeared to diminish with each exchange. Douglas had the answers that night. Tyson simply sustained a beating like Joe Louis versus Schmelling. To take that beating he had to be in shape. I think it was the rare case of a more seasoned fighter exposing a far greater talent using the right gameplan.

A one off deal.

 

Douglas had a hot night but his style made it tough for Tyson. Once Tyson leaned Douglas did not fear him Tyson's lack of defense and low punch out put ( I've always felt Tyson lost some of his aggressiveness after rounds 5-6 ) made it easy pickings for Douglas on the outside.

I think Jeffries stops Douglas in the mid rounds as Douglas didn't have the best set of whiskers, and tended to fade ( not in this fight ) late in some fights.

 

So some grainy film clip or none of it old timer from a century ago straight bout of a time machine is going to beat a modern top ten fighter ? LOL, only if you have rose colored glasses will one believe that nonsense..........caveman Jeffries has never ever seen or fought a fighter of Douglas's size and caliber. , ever. Now I do concede that Douglas had some problems between his ears but from a pure talent standpoint on his best night he will pulverize those oafs from the past.

Are you aware that Mike White and Jessie Ferguson defeated Douglas in his prime?! In addition Douglas was KO'd quite a bit by others who did not hit as hard as Jeffries likely did.

So unless you think 1980's and 1990's journeyman like White or Ferguson were better than Jeffries or insert any accomplished old time heavyweight, you can change your mind.

I just don't buy into the idea that Douglas wen't from being a second rate contender to an all time great overnight, then back again overnight.

Could he have beaten other all time greats that night?

I can't say for sure that he couldn't, but I think we have to assume that he wouldn't, for the purposes of threads like this.

Bingo. Tyson made him look that way. Tyson looked off from round 1 on, and Tyson usually is an absolute nonstop blazing fury in the 1st round, or first few rounds, which is why when Douglas outboxed him from the start I could see the rumors of his poor training were true. Tyson was getting pummelled and outboxed even early on. He wasn't sharp.

Old man light punching Greg Page had decked him in sparring. Hell even Trevor Berbick said he was beating up Mike in sparring. Tyson overtrained. He came to camp fat and out of shape, and then tried to get into shape and lose the weight in a very short period of time, so he starved himself and trained hard for a brief period of time, and was drained and lifeless . You take a guy like that and put him in the ring with a guy who is in shape and he'll make the guy look like an ATG. Any other time they would have called off the fight, but they thought so little of Douglas that they went forward anyhow, thinking that even a 50% version of Tyson would still beat him. And they were nearly correct, which is the sad thing. A dead man almost ko'd Douglas. Buster Douglas was a so-so ordinary heavyweight before the Tyson fight, at best decent/solid, and he was a so-so ordinary/decent heavyweight after the Tyson fight. He was what he was. No better than a lot of guys out there. But he only needed to be an in shape ordinary heavyweight to beat that version of Tyson.
