Read this years ago. As has been discussed here before, Sam took the safe, white road in his quotes. Not surprising at all he said this. In the ring, I would give Sam better than a 60% chance of beating any version of Jeffries.
So if you may have transgressed on one thing that was not be proven It is perfectly acceptable to punish you by trumping up another charge and convicting you of it? Point of my tirade was to say Johnson lived in extremely difficult circumstances for a man of colour and one who refused to toe the line and confine himself to the c**n walk was risking not only his liberty, but his life . Reaped their karmic debt to your satisfaction? Oh my God, how pompously smug is that? Who appointed you judge and jury?
Tom Sharkey gave Jeffries life and death over 45 rds. Any body here who doesn't think Langford beats the snot out of the face first Sailor, whom Fitzsimmons stopped twice? Jeffries said that Sharkey was his most difficult challenger because he was ,"all over you , never giving you time to get set" .Anybody see anything in Sharkey's repertoire that Langford did not possess more of?
The same authority who appointed you judge and jury over Jeffries. Or are you denying that you cast judgement over him at every opportunity? Clean up your own living room before telling me mine is dirty. And yes, I do judge Jack Johnson for beating up a woman and sending her to the hospital. It doesn't require an appointment.
Sam ****s up the big lug. The best fighter of this era was Fitz who was old but a ridiculous talent. Jeffries was a good newspaper story that could be sold with his supposed athletic talents and size and origins from what was still regarded as the Wild West. He couldn't hold Langford's jock.
I would not condone Jeffries or anyone else being sent to prison on a trumped up charge for something they did not do. There's no Karma involved in that ,its a miscarriage of justice. See the difference? ps Sorry I was rude.
Jeffries did give Johnson a tip of the hat when he said in an interview after the fight he didn't know if he ever could have beat Johnson.
That was mighty big of him, but some what cancelled out when he put his name to a story that he was beaten by drugged tea .
Since Jeffries had 18 fights that went under 15 rds ,and only 5 that went over, I think it is relevant.
many of those were scheduled for over 15, he was training for 20 rds mostly. i meant his physical attributes are best suited for longer fights, in more modern times that body type would be a disadvantage(slow and tires at high pace) but in his day toughness and stamina were #1.
Jeffries body was made to dominate light heavies and the equivalent of modern cruisers in the most trying fashion possible. Truly a marvel of athletic prowess.
