I have read lots of talk about Jeffries coming back but never realized why. Jeffries said he will allow no foreigner to carry away the championship. The year? 1907! Burns of course beat Squires badly in a filmed fight that can be seen today in one round. But had Tommy lost, I do think Jeffries would have emerged much fresher than the 1910 Reno version and won back the title. Jeffries was as fat as a pig in1907, he refereed the fight . No foreigner? What was Burns then for f*ck's sake, he was a Canadian! Since when has that been part of the US?atsch Jeffries would fight Squires because he wasn't much. Squires wouldn't go near Johnson and left Down Under to avoid his challenge. Jeffries offered to fight Squires in early Jan1907 for $25,000 win lose or draw but $20,000 was the biggest offer. The prospective promoters [the Rhyolite Club Nevada], made the following statement. "Jeffries demands are entirely unreasonable,He should understand that this fight will not be a great drawing card compared to a fight with Johnson,He can pretty nearly name his own purse if he will fight Johnson, but when he refuses to fight the only man for whom there is a really national demand ,he cannot expect to get a gold mine for fighting some one else"
Squires ( Australian born ) was a 10 to 9 favorite to defeat Burns who was born in Canada, but made his boxing name in the USA. Had Squires defeated Burns, I think Jeffries comes back.
Yes but in order to beat Burns, Squires has to be much better than he actually was, which then skews the question of whether Jeffries would have beaten him.
