Could be dangerous for both men. I'm guessing that this fight would boil down to which rules they fought under. The old rules that Jeffries fought under involved a great deal of holding and even out muscling opponents on the inside. This could be trouble for Morrison. On the otherhand, modern rules would give Morrison the edge. Tommy had a chin that was cracked on a number of occasions by big punchers, and Jeffries was no one to be toyed with. Of course, Jeffries had his nose broken on about 3 different occasions in his career including once by 165Lbs Joe Choynski. Jeffries had a qustionable defense from what I've been told. I suppose it could go either way.
One thing that might influence things is that Morrison had a tendency to punch himself out and not just in the most obvious example of the Mercer fight. of course Jeffries never fought a fighter as big as Morrison, you could say that with just about any post 1970 heavy, but I still think that Morrison would not be able to take him out, and if he tries to outbox him the way he did Foreman II, I think Jeffries is too mobile and does enough to win the the fight by later round TKO over an exhausted Tommy The Duke (Gun). It would come down more to conditioning, never one of Morrisons strong suits.
This is probably a very good analysis of what might happen. Like you said, Morrison wasn't very accustomed to fighting well past maybe the 5th round, and even in the early rounds of some of his fights, had problems. Tommy was floored twice and cut up by a very shop worn Carl Williams, drew with 8-8 Ross Purity, and was destroyed in a single round by 10-1 Michael Bent. Not to mention his pulverising match with Ray Mercer. Jeffries had strength and power, along with savy skills and even a wrestling background that could be very problematic for Morrison under London prize rules ( assuming they fought under such conditions). Morrison's best hope would be to land fast and early, in an attempt to hurt Jeffries, but the reality is that Jim was never taken out early. I don't know what kind of chances I'd give Morrison in this one.
I give Morrison the edge, He has underrated offensive ability. Jeffries would be facing an uphill battle. Make no mistake Jeffries is the greater fighter but Morrison can win this.
It would be interesting to see how Jeffries' chin holds up. Morrison is no supermiddleweight like Fitz. He's a genuine heavyweight with top end power. I'm not that impressed by Jeffries' power, either. It took him endless rounds to stop guys who were 30-40 pounds smaller. However, Morrison has a rather weak jaw and stamina and indeed lost to or struggled with some mediocre fighters at that point.
I think Jefries has the edge in durability,Morrison in one punch power,Morrison had a tendency to gas out ,after finding he cant put a dent in Jeffries chin ,I think he winds down,I take Jeffries by late stoppage.
Thinblack bump Morrison would crack that chin. Seeing footage of both Fitz and Morrison, Morrison impresses me waaaay more offensivley, good head movement, good combination punching, very good hand speed and insane power. If a old Fitz could destroy Jeffs face Morrison could certainly do much more. If this was fought in Jeffries time with 4 oz gloves and no mouthguard Jeffries would probably look worse than Willard after Dempsey.
Great fight......... Tommy must take Jimmy out inside 8 rds, or run the risk being stopped late...... Jimmy was also big, strong and heavy handed...... Tommy only looked very good for the full 12 rds against a passive 44 year old Foreman in 1993..... Either man could win...... MR.BILL
Did Jeffries ever see a decent sized heavyweight throw even the most basic combination? Let alone the FIRE and BRIMSTONE that a modern offensive combatant like Tommy Morrison delivered! Easy. Morrison KO 4. End Thread.
