It's tough not to like Cal but I think a prime Toney was an edge better and beats him ...

I love Toney but I just think its disingenuous to not think that Calzaghe couldn't get a controversial win over him. Far lesser than Calzaghe were able to give Toney problems but it also comes down to judging. Maybe Toney could stop him bcuz after Kessler, I'm not impressed by Calzaghe.

I think Calzaghe might be all wrong for James. I see this a difficult, fustrating fight for JT because Joe Calzaghe threw a lot of punches, was tough, wouldn't stop or slow down. James Toney was a great fighter, but don't forget he had a lot of close calls where the decision could have gone the other way. He could be lazy. If that Toney shows up, then I pick Calzaghe for sure. If a motivated James shows up, his countering could make it interesting.
As much a fan as I was of JT, I still have to go with Calzaghe here.

I'm going to mildly favor Calze by close decision. Matt makes good points tho. Despite his speed and volume Calz might be a bit too straight forward here.

@Tin_Ribs - care to help us out here with some input?

    A very interesting match up.

I could envisage both guys winning.

It really would have depended on their mindsets and their game plans going into the fight.

A lethargic James could have dismissed Joe and not given him his due respect. And he could have gotten a rude awakening.

Or there could have been fireworks at the pressers and the weigh-in, where Toney could have been fired up and motivated.

Would Joe have been confident to have unloaded his usual high volume against such a great fighter?

A prime Toney would have been the greatest fighter he’d ever seen.

Much better than the versions of Roy and Hopkins who he fought.

    There’s lots of questions here.

Could Joe have kept his composure and stuck to an exact gameplay, where he’d have applied educated pressure?

Would James have lured him into a macho tear up in the middle of the ring?

If Joe could have boxed him and stuck to a game plan, I think he’d have won.

If they’d have fought in the centre of the ring, in a shootout due to their egos, then James would have won. James was far more accurate with a better defence.

Their big fight experience could also have been vital.

James had fought and beaten Mike McCallum, Reggie Johnson and Michael Nunn.

Whereas Joe hadn’t fought or beaten anybody on the level of McCallum and Nunn.

It would have been a truly fascinating fight, and an intriguing clash of styles.

    I really can’t call it.

James was the more talented and skilful fighter, but Joe’s style and his great attributes could have overcome that.

I’d have loved to have seen it.

Lol. Toney doesn’t stand a chance. Toney’s resume is as thin as the paper his chin is made of. (I know he had a good chin but I could think of any other insult .)

Yes his is all wrong and his defensive and counter punching style would not work vs. the faster handed and had to catch Calzaghe. He is not Jirov! He throws lots of quick punches rarely if ever was countered. Toney does not have a high punch volume, struggles with speed, and does was often out jabbed.

Saying Toney's resume is thin when he beat the likes of Michael Nunn, Reggie Johnson, Iran Barkley, Vassily Jirov, Mike McCallum, Charles Williams, Evander Holyfield, is utterly ridiculous. Especially when the other fighter in this mythical match up, didn't exactly fight a murderer's row of great fighters.

You can’t give him credit for the Holyfield win. Holyfield was so past it by then just about anyone could have beaten him.

Hes the only man outside of Bowe where Holyfield was visibly having health issues vs Bowe 3rd time. To actually stop Holyfield and beat him up, yes Holyfield was past his best we are well aware of that. But Toney deserves credit for stopping Holyfield, which no one else managed to achieve apart from Bowe, where as I already explained Holyfield was having health issues.
