Was a former wba welterweight champion makeing 3 defences, holds wins over jose luis lopez and freddie pendelton, and was rumored to of handled de la hoya in sparring. What are your thoughts on page?
James was a good fighter, but his chin became suprisingly suspect. I dont know if it was weight drain related or what, but he just couldnt take a punch towards the end of his career. I think he was finished off by six head Lewis in a title defense and that was it for him.
Another interesting part of this whole story now that I thought about it was that James Page was having promotional problems with Don King, so Don had him beat by Andrew Lewis. Then Lewis tried to leave King and that was the start of Ricardo Mayorga. He was the one who quickly knocked out Andrew Lewis on Lewis' last fight with King. Had Lewis won he had a big fight promised with ODLH as he was to become a free agent. Don and Carl were dancing around the ring when Mayorga starched Lewis.
I shared a taxi back to the airport with his barber after Lewis-Holyfield I. Thats some claim fame eh?
His fight with Lopez is highly underrated. It was a war! But I think Lopez really blew that fight. Had he let his hands go more he woulda taken Page out. Still, it was one of the better welterweight slugfests of the 90's.
