I have a grainy but good enough tape of "Page-Tillis." That was a serious fight for BOTH mothers in Nov. 1982.... Page wound up beating the moose **** outta Tillis for an 8th round KO if I'm thinking straight... Angelo Dundee worked the corner of Tillis there in Texas... MR.BILL:bbb
angelo dundee worked quicks corner against pinklon then switched to pinklons corner until pinky loss to berbick then worked berbicks corner after he beat pinklon. hmmmm.
I remember when Tilllis first came on the scen he was he was pretty hyped up and many thought he would beat Weaver... Well he started out good and had a lead but for someone reeson froze up and choked... I remember Angelo DUndee was funing and slapping Tillis... Forgot exactly what he said but thats one of my early boxing memories.. Tilis after that was hot and cold but mostly cold and a stepping stone or gate keeper.. He should have been champ if he had the right mindset.
I remember Tillis well. Saw him fight live against Domingo D'Elia and Lynwood Jones. Yes, he was a lazy sort who had stamina problems and you had to start a fire under his stool to get him going. But one thing Tillis did possess in his arsenal was a world class one-two. The old left right was outstanding when he used it. He KO'd D'Elia with it, decked Greg Page, Carl 'The Truth' Williams and Mike Williams with it and staggered Weaver, Tyrell Biggs and Marvis Frazier with it. I don't know if any of his trainers tried to exploit the weapon, but if not it was a missed opportunity. I'm sure they spotted it if I did. One would think they were trying to wean him from the bad habits first. But I can't help but think if he had a trainer who was trying to capitilize on what he did best, that several hours in the job concentrating on this would have helped. Scartissue
