How do you see this mythical match up playing out? Always been very interested in James Scott he beat some real good light heavyweights fighting and training out of prison. I wonder what may have happened had he got his shot especially during the peak of his career... I think he'd give Tarver all he could handle. Much like Glen Johnson I see Scott being in Tarver's face all night whacking away to the body and head. I think Tarver with his combination punching and boxing skills is able to build up a lead early and win the fight on points by a narrow margin.
I think that would be an awesome fight. I think that Tarver on points is probably the best bet, but if Scott really really gets to him early Tarver might shell up a bit and allow him to put together a run on the cards. But yeah, Tarver Pts is probably the safest bet.
Whether the bout would have been held in Rahway, or anywhere else, Scott would pound out a decision over Tarver. Tarver would stick and move early on and buid up a lead after 5 rounds, but Scott would narrow the gap with his sheer strength and pressure and surpass Milk Dud's lead...nailing it down in the last few rounds.
Agreed. Tarver would not like the pace Scott set. No feints from the outside with lots of posing won't work against Scott. No ko ihappening n this bout, unless it was a cut. I think they could fight 3x and not see a knockdown and maybe not even knee's buckled. And since there were so few southpaw lh, I can see Scott having problems early before adjusting.
I never thought Tarver was anything special...mind you, I was much impressed with his ko of Jones, but he seemed to me to be a one-trick pony really. He's just the guy that Scott could get to...and out muscle, pinning him against the ropes and outworking him all night.
that's because he really isn't anything special. Kind of a Michael Nunn lite. But if he fights a guy that is happy o play the feint game on the outside and never press on the gas pedal, he'll be a load to beat. He's a guy that has to be taken out of his comfort range. I'm still surprised he didn't do better against an old Hopkins though. Dropping weight is a preventable thing to achieve, afterall. And it wasn't as if he was being asked to ko a guy like Hopkins. Just outbox the old guy to a comfy decision. But the boxing brains department came into play and how often do we see the guy with the big advantage in ring smarts overcome the attributes of the other guy?
What makes Tarver special is that he is a very good combination puncher he puts his punches together in bunches throughout the fight. He also has good power which I don't think would be to much of a factor against Scott. Personally I think his combination punching and workrate would make it very hard for Scott to beat him by decision. I do think Tarver would struggle in the late rounds but still would keep a good workrate keeping those rounds competitive I think he'd put enough of the early rounds in the bank to get the nod on the scorecards.
Exactly, and that's one of the reasons I don't appreciate Tarver that much...he couldn't get it in his Milk Dud head to just be smart and box him like Dawson and Kovalev did. this helped discredit him as a fighter IMO.
The thing to consider here is how Tarver would fare in a hostile environment like Rahway State Prison. How would he handle that pressure, nevermind the pressure that Scott would be putting on him all night. Tarver wasn't, as inplied in an earlier post, the best ring general inasfar as going with the best fight plan. Conversely, I feel that Scott would be pumped up big time in from of his fellow inmates, like he was in all his bouts in that environment. The only guys who fared well with Scott were Jerry Martin and Dwight Qawi, and I don't think that Tarver would have done the same, IMO.
