What a stupid thread. Toney is one of the best technical fighters, thats why he could fight 250 pound heavyweights when he was grossly out of shape. Im convinced 99% of the people on this forum have never even seen the inside of a boxing gym let alone laced a pair of gloves up. You dont have to dance on your toes to have good footwork either, you just have to be in proper position and Toney did pretty dam good from the outside and the inside especially considering hes realistically only about 5'9". :-(

His footwork was purely functional. His footwork wasn't good just because he could keep his balance. Fact is, he wasn't much of a mover. NOT A BAD THING! Just means certain styles would always give him trouble, wouldn't want you to think I was flaming him, I expect at least competant footwork from Elite fighters ;-) :good

    stupid thread,

ok fcukface, i have been boxing for 14 years and am a heavyweight,
have also grappled for years as well.

what training have you done? who have you sparred?

and i never said he had bad technique, i said he was over rated in that department cause he does the same stuff again and again.

ps yes he did do a lot of great things while being fat
but he also fcuking disgraced boxing as well

The thread says james toney...as a technical fighter is way OVER RATED Thats the ****ing joke. You cant do what Toney did if your as overated as your trying to make him out to be. If youve been boxing for 14 years you must have a horrible opinion of yourself if you think Toney is overated.

what does my opinion on myself have to do with toney?

people will tell that ali or dempsey are over rated
    or tyson or whatever

why is it so wrong to say this about toney

did he unify the belts at 160???
    nope

    what about at 168,
he fought jones who was coming up
    not the other champions
    who were quite good

didnt do much at 175, twice lost controversial decisons to
montell griffin, who got stopped by dariuz M

    did he unify cruiseweight
nope. while i think him vs gomez would have been great

but now you're talking about accomplishments, but your argument is that "as a technical fighter is way over rated"

Toney was an excellent technician. Not the biggest puncher, not the tallest fighter and he has ATG stats. To say hes overated is kind of silly really. In fact its quite the contrary, hes underated, because a good bunch of his fights he was not in top shape and still managed to do what he did. To start saying because he didnt unify divisions is more reason hes overated, is even more ridiculous.

what saying because he didnt unify a divison,
is cause to say he is over rated...well yes when people are calling him an ATG....

and if he didnt unify any of those divisons there is no sure way to know if he was actually the best at them...

meaning that he was really the best, not just because HBO boxing told you so...

and you said he often came in out shape,
another reason why he might have not been successful in unifying a divison
