It is widely agreed that James Toney didn't fulfill his potential however in which bouts did he perform at the closest to his potential.
His performance against Mike McCallum was easily his most impressive in my opinion, as well as one of McCallum's most impressive. Fantastic technical battle. EXTREMELY close and difficult to score.
yeah the first McCallum fight. Toney looked a million dollars against Barkey....but the Blade was made fom him and his eyes were a bit ****ed before the fight started. Jirov, Williams, Littles, DeWitt, Holyfield fights.
no doubt that has to be one of the best action packed fights with the most skill combined. not like gatti-ward fights.
Toney peaked with the Jirov fight, and that was a long time ago 03, after that it was all down hill, the massive weight gain, steriods, sluured speech, and the fact that he dosen't even train for his fight's, he's just to damn lazy and dosen't give a ****, and he's gotta a ****ed up attitude as well..:-( **** him..
I think the Toney 160-168 is as prime as it gets. A lot of people think he was behind in the Jirov fight up until his miracle off the ropes. Although for him to KO Holyfield, prime or not, is an amazing accomplishment from someone who started at middleweight.
No, it seems that Toney will fight Rahman on the 16th of July now, like he first intended before all these talks about him fighting Oquendo came up. Read it on the scene that presents boxing. That rematch is a much better fight than Toney-Oquendo imo, Toney-Oquendo made no sense at all. Rahman and Toney still have unfinished business and this fight will get more exposure. The loser should definitely retire.
I haven't seen anything of Toney at all. Would he have beaten Nigel Benn and Herol Graham? Bearing in mind Benn was a monster and Graham was a punch in the bollocks away from being on the correct side of a split decision against Mike McCallum.
