I thought Rahman edged him. I had him beating Peter the first time. But not the 2nd time obviously. Beating McCallum when he beat him was great. Nunn, Tate, etc. Toney had special boxing knowledge. He would have fought 10 times a year I think if he could have stayed in shape. He loves fighting.
As a person he's an ******* but as a boxer he's an ATG no doubt. Certainly top 40, maybe top 30 P4P.............. ...................and that's a lot of pounds too! (I couldn't resist)
that's striked from the record i'm afraid. fighters know the rules and toney broke em. i'm a bit mixed on toney. although i do agree he's an atg. lower reaches of the top 100 somewhere. he loses browny pts for the lost years and getting out of shape again after re-emerging from his club circuit years. atsch got lucky on decisions as well didn't he. still thought he lost both those fights to mccallum. especially the 2nd fight. :-(
...Hell yes hes an ATG, just figure it out? One of the best in-fighters, ever and has the record to prove it. ;-) Top 5 SMW as well.. (Top 3, honestly..)
Okay, first post on this forum. A hot topic. I def think Toney is one of the ATG's. And as far as being an *******, I've met him and he was pretty nice if not pleasant. A friend of mine went to Vegas for the Holyfield fight and ran into Toney. James Toney took time out for pictures and an autograph, this was the day before the Holyfield fight. His middleweight past alone makes him an ATG. Than there is the Jirov fight and the Holyfield fight. It's hard to say Toney is not great, don't let the weight and the loud television persona blind you.
it's all well and good saying don't be blinded by it. but it's part of his career and can't be erased. he let himself go and wasted a large chunk of his career from 95 to 2001. :yep
I'll agree he wasted some years and that is what bothers me the most. Not sure I can point out any now but I'm sure there have been other ATG and HOF boxers who where not exactly perfect. To me James Toney is one of the best Inside fighters and Counter punchers of all time. You don't see anyone today who fights on the ropes and slips punches and counters the way JT does. To me he is Old School.
Not a question of whether he's an ATG or not...the question is where on the list of ATG's is he? How many other Middleweights could have moved up to Heavyweight like he did and be not only competitive but beat and/or draw with 3 former HW Champs...not to mention he arguably beat Sam Peter, the current Interim WBC Champ in their first fight before finally getting too old and fat in the rematch. All time skills, all time chin.
Not in my books. An ATG trashtalker but other than that... his resume is good but imo not ATG material and his embarrassing stint at HW certainly does not help his case.
