Keep in mind that Vitali is only 3 years yoounger than Toney. A fully motivated and in shape (which seems to be the case now) is a credible opponent, more credible than the likes of Ruiz and Maskaev. But again, there is no real indication that JT will fight Vitali.

Rumors from sparring sessions...is there anything less reliable in boxing? Besides, the Klitschkos are not just big, if that was all they had, Tye Fields would be as good as they are. They have good skills in proportion to their size.

Gomez and Chagaev have achieved a lot more at HW than Toney. I would say they both probably beat every opponent Toney has beaten and with the possible exception of Roy Jones, they beat every fighter who has beaten Toney. JT is an ATG and it is remarkable that he can hang with the big guys at HW. But he also lost to Drake Thadzi, got a gift decision against Tiberi and his best win above LHW was a tough fight with Jirov. Vitali would administer his patented 8 round beatdown to Jirov and Toney just doesn't have the type of movement to land good punches on him.

    - James Toney has certainly more achieved at heavyweight than Gomez.Gomez got knocked out twice at heavy and beat no one.

    - Vitali will have trouble to land clean shots on Toney, too. Vitali was totally confused against Byrd. I agree with you that Vitali has to be heavily favoured as Toney will have a hard time getting on the inside and when he gets there Vitali will tie him up. Anyway, we will have some fun press conferences and I see a fully motvated and inshape JT doing better than the Gomez, Chagaev and Peter...

Guess Toney is finally ready to take his retirement payday -- and the brutal asswhooping that comes with it.

Wlad or Vitali will bust him up. :ko They have always wanted him, so I'm sure this fight will come off if Toney wants it.

I would not rule out that the Toney as of the Holyfield fight, with a good weight allowing him a fast pace and swift defense, would have a chance at frustrating a 38 y/o Vitali who may have slowed down enough that he has trouble connecting on THAT Toney.

But Toney at 40 ? He would need to show me he can go down to 210 first, and be ready to go fast for 12 rounds.

What has Toney achieved at HW that surpasses Gomez? He was outpointed by Peter in the second fight, the same Peter who was a punching bag for Vitali after four years out of the ring.

Vitali didn't look good against Byrd and still won seven of nine rounds and outlanded him 2:1 over nine rounds. I just can't see Toney landing more punches than Vitali, even if Vitali doesn't land a whole lot.

It is pretty obvious that Gomez has achieved nothing at all at heavyweight.

-Gomez got knocked twice out at heavyweight. Toney did not.

-Toney beat Holyfield, Guinn, Oquendo and draw with Rahman. He arguably beat Ruiz,Peter and Rahman. Who did Gomez beat? The fat Turkish Sumo fighter?

    - Agreed. Toney will have a hard time landing on Vitali.

Toney got beaten up by Oquendo and now he wants a title shot?

Shine up that IBA belt that you bought at wal-mart James because that is the closest thing you are getting to a real heavyweight belt. If you want a shot at Klitschko why don't you first beat Fres Oquendo the guy who you were given another gift over in your last fight.

not that again.. that fight was ****, yeah, but all fights involving Oquendo are. It was so close, it could've gone either way, depending on how you score fights. I value quality above quantity of punches thrown. It certainly wasn't a gift decision. And Toney didn't get beaten up either. Still, it was very disappointing for a Toney fan like me, and his performance certainly didn't earn him a title-shot. Then again, how many HWs that got title-shots during the last years really deserved their shot? Does Haye deserve a shot? No, yet the Klitschkos wanted to face him. I guess Toney would not do worse against Vitali than Gomez did, and he'd certainly do better than Peter (which isn't difficut).

Do you think Wlad is scared to finally unify the IBF, IBO, WBO, Ring, WBA and IBA titles?

    Toney vs Vitali....

Sure, why not... I mean, Toney is an irrelevant heavyweight fighter, but aren't they all these days. It would be interesting to see someone so short fighting someone so tall.
