I don't know too much about his early days. Can some of you vets on this board go in depth about his earlier career and what were some of his great wins? Who did he beat that were near the "elite" level? I know about his RJJ fight and his later days at HW but that's about it. He just seems like he's mastered the game of boxing like few ever have. It's really fun to watch him make people miss and do his thing with subtle movements and come back with incredible counters. Just anything related to Toney, please discuss. :good
[YT]Wq-hpl3nPjg[/YT] here's a good highlight video. James has been my fav boxer since his fight with Jirov. i think he's the most technically skilled fighter in all boxing.
I love james toney his is seriously one of my favorite fighters. He is the definition of subtle and I just hate to think how unbelievably sick his legacy would have been if he would have had a little bit more control over his physical body and health. The guy is unreal with one of the most granite chins of all time!!!
One of my fave fighters! His HW run is a real what-if collection of under par performances. All for about 15 lbs of fat he could have lost.
All I know is that he should definitely rank above Bernard Hopkins all time, he was a superior fighter and fought much steeper opposition all the way through.
A contemporary ATG, who fought with the skill set and boxing IQ of the old school, but who damaged his legacy by lacking discipline outside the ring. It is another testament to his throwback nature that the long stretches of inactivity in the current state of boxing took such a toll on him. This was the kind of fighter who would have thrived on fighting five, six, seven times a year. Without injuries and buffet lines, Lights Out could have cleaned out the heavyweight division. I'd have put money on the 218 pound Toney who obliterated Holyfield to beat anyone in the current heavyweight top 10.
Funny you would mention the Holy fight because i just caught it on ESPN. Wow, talk about a master boxer. Incredible head movement/upper body movement. And if he isn't dodging a punch, he positions his head/body into a spot where he absorbs the punch with the least amount of impact. He would sometimes see Holy getting ready to punch and he would actually get closer to the punch which didn't get the necessary space to create the momentum. Amazing subtle mastery in the ring. So fun to watch. I do wonder what he could've done had he been in shape at HW. I thought he clearly beat Peter in their first fight.
Definitely, didn't lack anything inside the ring. What hurts him is his discipline outside of it. He's an ATG as it stands though.
ATG.. one of the craftiest, most skilled fighters of his era, and has P4P one of the best chins in boxing. I think his best win is over Vassiliy Jirov. I'd also choose Toney H2H over any fighter at CW as well.. maybe even Holyfield, I'm not sure yet.
At this particular point it'd be a toss up for me. If I were to put my money on one fighter I'd lean slightly towards Holyfield, and even then it'd be a really close, disputable decision imo.
