James Toney is my fav fighter. He's one of the very best of our era, an ATG, and I seriously believe that he had the potential to become one of the top 5 ATG ever. Toney has mad skills, one of the best giving angles and rolling with punches, he don't run but stays right in front of even the most murderous punchers, he got good punching power from MW up to CW, good killer instinct, a warrior, as tough as they come, very smart boxer, one of the best chins in the game, he's a defensive master who's exciting to watch, he has a funny attitude outside the ring, he can talk a good talk, very humourous, and also a very friendly nice guy once the cameras are off. His laziness outside the ring is the thing that ruined a lot for him. He's had a great career, but now imagine what it would have looked like if he had the discipline, focus on training and eating habits like... let's say B-Hop. We'd have had a top5 ATG ever. All of his off-nights, injuries (causing the use of nandrolone), and periods of inactivity have the same reason: him not preparing right for his fights. Still, of his losses most were robberies, and only in his loss to a prime ATG in RJJ did he get really dominated, in a fight where he was severely weight-drained. Toney is a natural SMW/LHW. He still looked good as a CW but he's not a HW. He can take a hard HW punch without blinking, because he sees them all and has a great chin, and even if he has not much power at HW his timing and accuracy could make him knock down Ruiz and Holyfield, and stun Peter. He was out of shape, injured and past his prime in all of his fights at HW except Holyfield and his experience and skill still made him competitive with the best HWs. If Toney had stayed injury-free after his fight with Holyfield, he wouldn't have gone up that much in weight, but he'd have settled somewhere between 220-225 lbs, he'd not have used nandrolone, which cost him a belt, he'd have fought at least 2 times a year and stayed in shape, keeping his timing. He would have cleaned up the division (since it is a weak division I must admit) and even given Wlad a competitive fight. I still think that Wlad would have won such a fight if it happened, because the physical differences are just too important (as I said, Toney is not a HW), but I think JT would have given Wlad his toughest fight and no way Wlad would have knocked an in-shape Toney out.
So coming into the RJJ/Toney fight, Toney was considered one of the P4P best. What did he do and who did he beat to get to that point? I'm just curious to know about his earlier days because i already know about his later days.
Fantastic ability and an excellent Boxer but he pretty much blew his biggest stages. I'll never get over the RJJ fight entirely:verysad I expected JT to be the one who could do roy in. His personality made him an enigma of sorts but he was one hell of a tough MW. I'll never forget the beating he dished on Holy either. For those who hate JT's personality? He showed the utmost respect to Evander afterwards and that shows some character.
Holyfield would have beat the hell out of Toney in his younger years.Please.Matched up head to head at crusierweight Holyfield would have beat the hell out of Toney.
Verry good summery of James Toney I really agree that he could have been a top 5 ATG and at heavyweight he shoud have been 220-225 lbs.
One of my All Time faves. Just amazing to watch. He was so ridiculously good its a shame he couldn't commit to keeping in shape.
My statement didnt revolve around when or if. It was merely a statement on what happened when they fought. JT couldnt miss and it was a clinic.:good
He failed 2 steroid tests so that tells me he had a problem with steroids he lost to Glas Jaw Roy Jones in embarrassing fashion. Was way overhyped at Heavyweight where he was often a fat slob. I don't see what is so great about the guy he did beat Jirov but he really disgraced himself and the sport as a Heavyweight.
He wasn't to everyone's tastes, but I quite liked Toney's press conferences, talking smack about everyone! As a fighter, he was good to watch from a technical viewpoint, had all the old school skills, great durability, went all the way up to HW from middle, stopped Holyfield and went 24 rounds with Sam Peter. I still think Toney won the first one.
:good *slaps mic out of hand* I DON'T LIKE YOU DAWG!!!! I DON'T LIKE YOU!!! (jim grey) - JT rofllllll
