Just checked on boxrec, Toney fought 600+ rds as a pro in his career, and it's not even finished yet. And mostly against quality opposition. Now that's what I call old-school! Could it be that Toney is the fighter with the most pro rounds under his belt who is still active? More amazing facts: Toney has only been down three times in these 600+ rounds. Reggie Johnson caught him flush and knocked him down. Toney got up pretty quick tho. As we all know, Roy Jones Jr and Samuel Peter knocked him down too, but that was more a thing of Toney being off-balance, he wasn't really hurt by these punches. He was never knocked out or even on the edge of being knocked out.
James Toney is one of the few fighters of recent memory who has had a career defined by a "fight anybody, anywhere, anytime" mentality. He is one of my favorite fighters ever, and one who really made me a hardcore fan of the sport.
I agree about Toney, he's a legend. He has fought almost as many rounds as JC Chavez (though not anywhere near as many as Roberto Duran!) and his record stands comparison. Chavez is always rated so far ahead of Toney in all-time P4P lists. Maybe it's time we had a re-think and gave Toney the credit he deserves.
Carlos Baldomir has 504 rounds Oscar has 300 exactly Marvin Hagler ended with 399 exactly Glen Johnson has 400 exactly
Toney's been active for 20 years-----gotta cut him a bit of slack----He's been great for the game-----one of my favourites--a dirtymouthed-fight anybody LEGEND...:smoke :smoke
Old school skills plus an old school resume. Sure his best days are far in the rearview, but the man is a bona fide throwback great. Anyone close to him have a gauge on his weight right now?
one of my fav fighters is james toney. great counterpuncher, but not a safety first fighter either. what cost him was not having a high enough workrate. he fights 1 minute of everyround. and if you are athletic enough to get out the way then you had a good chance.if he won the fight by one round he felt he had it in the bag. also his wieght had always been an issue. he was a big eater. but still he was not a 160 pound guy. he looked horrible at 160. yet could close the deal. he seemed to get better when he went up in wieght but so did his eating habits. i personally feel he was a 185 pound fighter. too small for cruiser too big for anything under. nunn was a close fight and if he didnt land that left hook he would of mos defintly lost reggie johnson gave him a tough fight, johnson might of been able to win if he was more aggresive in the last 2 rounds but he was gassed by this point. both mcCallum fights were very close but still great showings of technical expertise. tiberi aswell gave ahim a struggle.
So's Roy Jones, So's V.Klitschko and I'm sure scores and scores of others who simply haven't been caught in the act.
Yea that's probaly why he's sluuring his speech so badly and you can't even understand him anymore, yea and by the way Burger King boy/Steriod junkie is gonna get his ass handed to him by Rahman next week..:yep
Toney is a mere novice compared to Slapsie Maxie http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=11349&cat=boxer
