If we replaced Shavers with Toney of the Holy field ko ,how's he do against Ali ?.Toney s old school tricks against the greatest ? Could Light s out produce a holyfield type performance here ..or is Muhammad holding on to that belt ?
If Toney turns up like he did against Holy then I think yes he can outpoint that Ali. He might even make Ali look a fool at times
Yez Birmingham ,Toney against holy field ..he was perfect that night. He ripped the heck out of him .And holy field still had a few good performances i n him , so not completely done. So against Ali ,bringing that level to the fight you have to give him a realistic chance. I think Ali would find him very frustrating ,being caught time after time and maybe missing his jab often. And Toney won't be fazed by Muhammad s rep either.
No chance. He would not win rounds trying to counter the Ali jab. And I still think Muhammad's reflexes were good enough at that time to land lead right hands on James. That shoulder roll would not work at all & Ali would still be turning him and peppering away with the flicking jab. He knew how to throw the flashy combos the judges loved and Toney would be covering up---thereby not winning rounds. Ali would turn it into a footwork fight and it'd be about as competitive scoring wise as when Toney fought Jones.
