It will and will get the same answer. John Ruiz defeated Holyfield for the title and then Roy took it from him. Does that mean history won't count Ruiz as a former WBA champion and Holyfield as a former WBA Champion(and his fifth HW title victory which is mentioned quite a lot)?

At the time Jones fought Ruiz, Lennox Lewis was I believe the heavy weight champion. Ruiz is just a guy who had a belt in an era where there are more than one. Holyfield is a two time champion, he beat Buster Douglas for the title, lost it to Bowe, won it back and lost it again to Moorer who lost it to Foreman who lost it to Briggs who lost it to Lewis who lost it to Rahman who lost it to Lewis who then retired. If the wba title is held by anybody but the lineal champion then he is no more the champion than whoever holds the wbf or wbu or wbo or any other unrecognised title.

If you've been fighting since 89' taking blows over the course of 80 professional fights, coming up in weight as a smallerman to take hits from men that brutally outsize and outpower you at the end of your career, YOU'D BE MUMBLING TOO. Seems to me that you can't respect a flat out unreal athlete in James Toney, If you fail to accept the truth then I feel bad for ya.

Put it this way, Samuel Peter has 31 fights and compared to Toney thats still an infantile record. Lets see how Samuel Peter will be talking after 80 fights and if he has some more like he performed against Jameel mccline he ain't going to be speakin anymore English , He'd be back to speaking African instead :smoke

    My bad then.

Although the post is directed to any and all assholes that want to downgrade a fighter of Toney's class.

    African is a language?! :huh

But agree with your points - Toney does not get the respect he deserves on this forum.

Never said he was #1 but still he was a champion, like many people consider Cotto the main man at Welterweight when he doesn't have the lineal title or even Margarito, those guys will still be remembered as former CHAMPIONS. NOT the top men or #1 champion in the division but still champions. That's my point here, never said he became the top guy in the division after that win but still a former Heavyweight champion and that's how history will remember it whether you agree with it or not.

Well then, as I said in the first place history needs to check its facts. Audley Harrison won the wbf belt, is history going to remember him as a former champion? I certainly hope not. 'History' is intangible and very often completely false.
Give him all the credit he deserves for beating Ruiz, it's a good win but it didn't make him the champion.

Of course it won't remember him as a champion just like it won't remember Danny Williams winning the Commonwealth British title because both fall in the same category. There are 4 major titles that history will count whether you agree or not and they are the WBC/WBA/IBF/WBO, winning all makes you the top man in the division and winning one makes you a champion but not the #1 champion which still makes you a CHAMPION because that's how you unify, by simply fighting another champion, you don't just get it within 1 fight unless you're lucky enough to meet someone that collected them all the hard way. Again I repeat I KNOW it didn't make him THE champion but A champion, there's a major difference but still doesn't remove the former champion title history-wise just like it won't forget that Holyfield is a 5 time champion either and always mentioned, that's how it goes.

Well maybe you're right but it's misinformation.
