It has been a long time. Toney has finally got his weight down to 217, his lowest in 6 years. All the reports and rumours which previously indicated that Toney has been training hard for one last attempt at the title have been confirmed. Getting down to that weight for such a meaningless off tv really tells the whole story. Real Toney's experts know that Toney has only been serious for certain lapses of time during his career and now such a time has come again. I expect Toney to beat Greek easily and finally move on to bigger and better things. A bout with Quizeda (WBC No4)towards teh end of the year (who has called Toney out a few times ) and a Vitali Klitschko showdown are likely to be next.
Look, I was about 15 when Toney KOd Michael Nunn. At the time, I hated Michael Nunn and the come from behind victory was so huge. I watched him over the years when he beat McCallum and Barkley, fought Jones, made a huge combeack against Jirow, and made a serious run at heavy. So believe me when I say that his time is done. He pissed it away. It is not too much of a stretch to say that had he kept to it, he might have been in that super elite class reserved for guys like Robinson, Ali, Greb, Duran, ect. He did not get there, and he is not going to. At 40, with sharp weigth losses and gaisn undoubtedly effecting his health, and a serious cigar smikong habit, he is shotter than shot, regardless of what weight he obtains.
This isn't a surprise to me. There have been rumours about Toney being dedicated and serious again for a long time. I always said that Toneys perfect weight at HW would be 215lbs, he's nearly reached that now. I also think 205-210lbs would maybe be too light. He was 217lbs against Holyfield, he looks exactly the same now, and he was fantastic in that bout, but we shouldn't forget physique isn't everything - Toney is six years older now than he was back then against Holyfield. It may very well be too late for Toney now, but since he'll continue fighting we'll see soon enough how much he has left. I have a feeling there's another big fight waiting for Toney down the road, maybe even a title-shot. The only thing that really makes me sad is that he didn't motivate himself and came in in this shape against Rahman three years ago, when he got that shot at the WBC belt. He certainly had a better chance to change the HW division back then than he has now.
Im a big toney fan but at this age getiing down to his lowest weight has probably killed him not that we will find out against limited opposition ,the last time he came in light was sam peter 2 and he got beat up bad and that was after he won the first fight ,In my opinion anyway ,I think he missed his chance in the heavyweight division but will go down as one of the greatest fighters of all time
Awfully unlikely he'll ever be a champion again but I never completely count out an ATG if they show up to fight.
This weight has been a long time coming for Toney fans. In contrary to other posters here, I don't think that Toney will be weight drained at all. It is well documented that Toney took the weight off SLOWLY and has been training since the beginning of this year to get back in shape. If age hasn't got the better of his reflexes, I am positive that Toney can be a major factor again.
Toney took the weight off correcty over the long course of 9 months, so no problem. Dan Rafael stated that Vitali will fight again in December and given the state of the division, it is likely that the rededicated Toney may be in the mix.
can we get a weight in pic? and yeah should be on the Andre Ward undercard don't think it'll be shown, but if it ends in a KO, maybe highlights will be shown of the fight before Andre Ward fights.
