why didnt he fight more championship fights why wasnt he concerned about fighting the best at 168 then wasting time with guys who were genuine clubfighters?

I agree that Toney is universally overrated, but comparing him with Zab Judah is downright laughable. At his best Toney was a fantastic fighter, but never among the true elites to have fought in the sport. At his best Zab was an inconsistent fighter who never measured up to the elites due to his lack of any mental strength. He was simply a physical specimen who couldn't put it together. Toney did put it together from time to time, that's the difference, and was a much more successful (not to mention skilled) fighter than Zab because of it.

I feel Toney gets overrated due to the constant excuses made by his fans (though at times they hold merit), but moreso than anything, I feel they overrate his abilities at his peak. Excellent technician, particularly in the upper body, but generally poor footwork which would've cost him against most of the top out-boxers at MW over the years. I think the fact that he couldn't even comprehensively beat an old Mike McCallum in some of his best performances should give you a sense of his limitations among the all time great MW's.

I actually agree with you. James Toney is the classic "squeaky wheel gets the grease" personality and it has served him well. As a middleweight he never look dominant against anybody that I can recall.

Every fighter has a weakness, some has theirs more cloaked than others due to having that little bit extra to different things they really do well.

James Toney is your Father. You are to him what Luke was to Darth Vader in the Empire Strikes Back. James Toney is a Living Legend, and a lock to have his own wing in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, when he tires of winning fights and capturing belts. Maybe, someday, Prince Naseem Hamed can get a job as a janitor at Canstota and mop up Jame Toney's wing. :good

I think Toney is a great fighter all things considered. His exploits at cruiser and then heavy seal it for me.

However, he is certainly overrated H2H. The first thing I ever notice about James Toney is his lack of mobility, at any weight. I think he'd struggle to beat bonafide greats at any weight, including middleweight. If you look at how he just sneaks past an aged Mike McCallum its evident. For that reason I think he'd be lower down the great scale.

    who did james toney beat?
why do many claim he'd beat guys like marvin hagler when he struggled with past there best fighters like mike maccalum and sub-elite fighters like montell griffin who will never be remembered.
lets keep it educated no name calling
