I believe he won the both Griffin fights and the Thadzi cause he was landing the cleaner shots.

Neverthless, Toney has over 80 fights and it is not unsual to lose a couple fights to not big names. You can not always be focused, in top shape and escape bad decisions.Just look at Duran, same thing.

 

Exactly. Old school fighters who fight all the time, are bound to have couple of bad nights in the mix.

And yes Toney deserved nod in both of the Griffin fights

Couldn't agree more.

In time, people will look FAR more kindly on an old, past-prime, out of shape, 5ft 9in former middleweight who moved up to heavyweight, stood toe to toe, and held his own against natural 240lbs+ heavyweight powerpunchers like Sam Peter and Hasim Rahman.

People just get caught up in the "he's a fat loudmouth" rubbish and overlook his pretty astounding accomplishments. The guy is a born fighter, a chin of concrete and some beautiful intuitive skills.

And to those who (wrongly IMO) attribute all of his hw feats to 'roids', they can never lowball his great wins/performances at 160, 168 and 190 in this way.

His win over Nunn was one of the all-round best wins of the 1990s, his comeback in 2003 was epic (Jirov & Holyfield), his performances in the 1st McCallum fight and vs Barkley were joyous, and his KOs of Prince Charles Williams and Jason Robinson were gorgeous.

Brilliant mid nineties fighter.One of my best boxers to watch.Always wanted to see him against our best to see what he could do.

 

At the end of the day, James Toney is an ATG and despite him being so hated, nobody can ever take that from him.
Sure, he got busted on roids twice and that will always hurt his legacy, but his record doesn't lie.
His HW campaign was a bit of a roller-coaster, but he had no business there at first place and what he has accomplished there - I don't think B-Hops or Roy Jones could've done that. Can you imagine Roy or B-Hop going countless rounds with big punchers like Sam Peter or Hasim Rahman without getting stopped? I don't.

There are a lot of negatives about this man. But for all the lack in focus, self-discipline, and all the deserved criticism, he's still one of the toughest, and, on his night, one of the most skilled boxers to ever step into a ring.

 

All this Toney praise, but what about all that super natural talent that he threw away only due to lack of discipline and self control?
