No. I read something a few years ago with him saying exactly that. As far as I'm concerned it just shows that McCallum is highly under rated on this and other forums.

Expects thread to get hijacked by Jones fan boys pi ssing and moaning about James not worshipping at the altar of their hero.

    So did I.

If JAMES TONEY is saying that *insert fighter here* is the best fighter he fought, you better believe he is telling the truth as it'd take James - due to his ego - a lot to admit it before he say's he was better than them or that they are all bums. But he does seem to have a LOT of respect for Mike.

McCallum was such a superb technician.

I never got the 'body snatcher' name due to me expecting him to end fights like hat ton did (body shots), but boy did he break down fighters with his body work!

Not suprised at all, it was either McCallum or Jones, and its much easier for most fighters to appriciate fighters they beat. McCallum was great, and deserves the credit.

I'm not saying McCallum wasn't great, because he was.

But these guys often pick guys they beat as the best they ever fought. Just saying.

Yep, I don't think his ego really could handled being embarrassed by Jones like that. Mike was by far the more well schooled technician, but Jones's power and freakish speed set him apart in his prime, but due to being handled so easily by him I don't think Toney quite can admit that.

This is a truism that has started to ring false in my ears. He's probably my favorite fighter, but I think he's started to get overrated rather than underrated. There's a good few that not only has him among the very best JMWs ever (which is fair), but also among the very best MWs. That's certainly not underrating him.

Can't say exactly who I'd rank higher of Mike and Roy p4p, but Jones was a very, very special fighter in his prime and there's no shame whatsoever in being ranked below him.

A little surprised not to see Jirov's name pop up once, but scanning the categories I guess he might not be a lock for any of them, above those mentioned.

Were there a "Mentally toughest", however...

Jones was better than McCallum as a boxer and pfp. Doesn't matter what Toney says.

I'm not too concerned about worthless p4p rankings, but I can assure you there are plenty of fools ( fanboys ) who rate Jones non existent 154 title, and his Middle weight title from beating Hopkins, and defending it once against Tate, as equal to Mike's resume. In much the same way as they claim Jones 168 record is equal to Welsh Joe's.

The reality is their respective 154 - 160 ( McCallum,) and 168 ( Calzaghe ) resumes sh*t all over Jones's at those weights.

I mean ffs McCallum didn't even go up to 175 until he was 38, by that time Jones had become a walking punchbag ( but I digress ) it is probably due to the fact that MM fought in a style that meant he could go on until he was older without turning into a punchbag that Toney admired.

    Hence best overall.

McCallum had a style Im sure Toney would appreciate. Old school, no frills but full of subtlety and efficiency.
No surprise really that Toney rated him highly
