Which is more entertaining, a boxer with the King's etiquette, a bow tie and dry personality or a boxer who is eccentric (Mayorga, Toney etc) with a brash personality that keeps fans interested? BOXING IS A BUSINESS AND ENTERTAINMENT IS PART OF THAT BUSINESS.
James Toney's a punk plain and simple.its got nothing to do with marketability,Eubank and Benn in their heyday were extremely marketable with Eubank billed as the man people love to hate but they kept everything within boundaries without resorting to crassness like Toney.Toneys never been marketable, when was the last time he had a ppv?People just straight out dont like him and he's lucky to spew such verbal garbage over satelite link up because Benn would kill him in a one on one street fight.Dont get me wrong, under marques of queensbury rules Toney would no doubt be favorite but on the street the rules change and Benn would be too fast and vicious for that Yankee punk.
All bull**** - every word and you know it. If Toney announced he were going to fight a contender tomorrow, and Toney made a big spectacle at the press conference, guess who will be tunning into ESPN to see what happened. Guess who will be tunning in to see his next fight. YOU! The more you dislike the villain the more you'll be inclined to watch the villain anticipating he'll lose.
chris eubank in his prime would of pissed on tony. James toney wouldnt beat eubank in his prime eubank was too quick.. toney would of been taking a beating
I think what you're saying is partially right... I think people would tune in for the likes of Mayweather, because he really is someone people love to hate. He plays the villain with some intelligence. Toney is just a useless, fat ****.
I think that James Toney is more lighthearted when he trash talks. You can practically see a smile being held back on his face the entire time. Mayorga on the other hand is a complete ass hole. Against Oscar he was constantly talking about his wife and new born child... but the worst was against Spinks, when he was talking about his mother who had just passed away, saying that he was going to "send him to be with his dead mother". Mayorga takes the trash talking WAY too far. Toney does sometimes as well, but I have never seen him do something like that. Normally, he just calls people silly names, and says he will knock them out.
I am a Brit and have really enjoyed the Eubank Ben rivalry, I am happy they never faced Toney, as it would have undermined their careers. Toney would have destroyed Benn, and taken Eubanks to school. when Eubank and Benn were fighting each other, they were no bette rthan 4th and 5th in the division, I rated Toney,Jones, Mcullam and even Michael Nunn ahead of them. Amzaing depth to the division considering you had the likes of Steve collins Reggie Johnson barely making the tp 10 fighters.
Very true :good The Eubank v Benn rivalry was legendary, I don't think we'll ever see that in boxing again.
I haven't the time to read the various rants above but I have to confess I have always found Toney's rantings rather tiresome. I mean talking about Eubanks "momma" is kids stuff. I remember him throwing the mic down when being interviewed after the Holyfield fight as well. I just think he's a bit of a prat & if he ever gets back in the ring I'll be hoping he takes a severe beating.
Toney is a ****ing comedian. He is the dude that is the barbershop that gives you a free comedy act. Cracking on everybody. When that mother****er was talking about Tarver..........you clowns have no type of sense of humor anyway.
James Toney in his prime would beat Eubank and Benn, I have no doubt. I like Benn and Eubank both, but Toney was just better then both of them. I don't think Benn's chin could hold up to Toneys punches, Benn would be the aggressor which would be just fine for Toney as he loves to play counter puncher, the fight would look like Toneys wins over Arthur Williams, who was a much bigger and stronger former Light Heavyweight Champion. So my guess is Toney would either win a decision or TKO Benn late. The Eubank fight would be a much more difficult fight for James, this may have even been a series of fights with Eubank winning one and all of them being close calls, because Eubank was just a very difficult man to fight. I see these fights similar to Toneys fights with Mike Mccallum. But all in all I would say James Toney would beat both of these men on most nights..
Thats how we get down. Short and to the point. Aint nobody with all that other bull****. JT is the funniest mother****er in boxing.
