That was his last really good fight. His legacy would have been intact and he wouldn't be seen as such a joke now. He is one of the greatest old school defensive fighters in history. It is sad to see where he has fallen to.

What about his fights with Holy and Ruiz?

I don't think the aftermath of the Ruiz fight did his reputation any good.

Holyfield is shot and was shot when they fought. Ruiz never was that good. Jirov was on top of his game and gave as good as he got in their fight. It was a fight of the year nominee.

The amount of anti-Toney revisionist history that goes on with boxing fans today is outrageous. Ruiz was never that good but when RJJ danced his way to a points win over him it was one of the greatest achievements in the history of boxing. Then Toney stands in the pocket and beats him like an erection and it is nothing. **** it.

Point taken but the fight with Ruiz was not anywhere near the fight Toney vs Jirov was and no one was surprised when Toney outclassed either Holyfield or Ruiz. Well no one that knows boxing that is.

Nothing that you said there is untrue, but there's a reason why Pacquiao has all of the legitimacy and Floyd has none. Or at least at welter weight, anyway. Even though people who know boxing expect you to shred Ruiz (I am not sure I agree that with Holy people who "knew boxing" uniformly picked Toney to stop him) you still have to go out and do it to prove that you can.

Sure, Holy was a million miles past his prime but IMO that was still a good win for him. Are we forgetting that Toney is a natural middle weight?

Toney was paid like $3 million to fight Holyfield. Plus, even if Holyfield was 41 years old, it was also a fight that helped Toney win The Ring's Fighter of the Year.

Holy was 1 to 3 favorite to win it, so by no means was everuyone expecting Toney to win it.

It was a great victory for Toneys legacy

I certainly think getting outboxed by Sam f'n Peter in the rematch should've told him something.

Damon Reed may have a kick-ass first name, but he's also an overfed cruiser that gets knocked out, usually fairly quickly, by any name value fighter he's come up against. Should be an easy but fairly meaningless night for Toney, there to blow off some cobwebs.
