He was injured in the training camp leading up to that match.

First Peter match shows, how Toney outboxes opponents of Peters caliber.

Damon Reed is good tune up fight, after s long layoff.

It also should lift Toney back in top-15 - top-10 in eyes of some of the major sanctioning bodies.

After that he could get eliminator or fight Tarver to further raise his ranking.

He got robbed against Sam Peter first time out. If he hadn't, he'd have won a heavyweight title, and that would have been a good time to bow out.

I doubt if he could of retired then it was the fight which pushed him back into the spotlight again. His refusal to train properly is what really derailed his hw reign, should of retired after Ruiz

It's easy to say James should have retired after the Jirov fight now that you know how history has played out, but JT was on top of the world after that fight. He was a player again, in the spotlight for the first time since the mid 90's or something like that. He had to continue...just to see how far he could reach.

I don't think being a top 5 Heavyweight Contender for 4-5 years with only 2 goddamn loses to a top guy(1 being very close) HURTZ his legacy dat much 4 realz.

This smells like an anti-Peter thread if you ask me. You just fear who necks.

Decent wins: Holyfield, Guinn, Oquendo,Rahman (draw)

Decent performances: Peter I, Ruiz, Rahman II.

All in all, the heavyweight adventure enhanced his status in history.

Maybe he should have retired after the Holyfield win. Holyfield was past his best, but not shot yet - he was still considered a top5 HW at the time by most boxing experts, and a favourite against Toney. Toney dominated him, schooled him and stopped him. Who else ever did that to Holy? (I know Bowe KOed Holy too in their 3rd fight, but that was a war where Bowe was struggling badly).

I would like to remember Toney leaving the sport with such a win. But it's hard to retire when you're the Ring fighter of the year tho. Toney can't even retire now that he's shot...

I believe that Toney could've had a couple good years & wins and maybe even a major title at HW if it hadn't been for injuries, bad luck, robberies, but first and foremost because of his own inability to turn up at fights in proper shape and take his opponents seriously..

Toneys roller-coaster ride at HW was disappointing in restrospect, and a win over Damon Reed will not change anything. But at least Toney proved that he can hang in there with the real big boys and take their best shots - he proved he's not only one of the most skilled fighters to ever step into the ring (something we knew all along), but also one of the toughest, with a legendary chin. In that regard, his HW run contributes to his already great legacy.

His lingering around now that he's shot and his roid abuse surely don't.

JT has hypopituitarism and was able to capture a HW title, which is legendary

--> I discount him being caught with steroids because it was administered to correct his low test levels that were secondary to pituitary stalk compression

Toney messed up big time at heavyweight. Had he worked harder & had more confidence in himself, he may have well become the unified WBC/WBA champ, which was inconceivable a few years eariler.

    Confidence definitely wasn’t and isn’t Toney’s problem.

He is quite possible most confident fighter I have ever seen. Inside and outside of the ring
