Of course nobody can force him to retire, but we can still tell him to. This situation right now... it reminds me of these dark years at the end of the 90s. When Toney had long lay-offs, balloned up in weight, lost fights he shouldn't have and faced tomato cans on parking lots in non-televised fights - for 10.000$ purses. And that was AFTER he was champ at MW and SMW... The big difference is, Toney was still relatively young then, and he came back to win the CW championship and become the Ring fighter of the year once again. Right now, I don't see any future for Toney being an active fighter besides facing these c-level opponents - and sooner or later he'd probably even lose against one of them. I don't want to see this any longer.
I am not writing him off yet. But needs to fight regularly now(even on off tv dates), then the weight will also comes down. No more long lay off.
He could be the best Walmart greeter in the world. Period. Ain't no ****ing way those old men are going to make a better gretter. Period.
I was joking of course. From what it looks like, these days Toney can make more money in MMA than in boxing. He should take 250k from Dana White and get choked out by Rampage...
well we want toney to retire because we all know he doesnt have a shot of being good ne more . hes deffo on the decline. but were all assuming hes rich and can just retire n live with no worries. but maybe he needs money n he thinks he can get a big payday. an u kno wut toney will talk his way into one more decent pay day.
i love toney to bits but when i listen to his interviews on fight hype i cringe it used to make me laugh but looking at that pic he needs to retire. i watch his highlights before i go gym and what he could when he was in shape was amazing to watch but i cant take him serious anymore
I'm with you man, even as a Toney fanatic, we have to admit the time has come. And gone really, but hey. I wouldn't mind if he feasted on a few cans to get to 80 wins though. Then maybe one last shot against a relevant contender next year. We won't see another fighter get to 80 wins in a long, long time.
Basically you're right. However, this is exactly the same thing we've been saying since 5 years now. And JT disappointed us time and time again. James Toney will always remain my favourite fighter, but enough is enough.
I never knew much about Toney from his prime, what i've learnt from his past was from ESB. All i saw was an unmotivated fat ****er, with a big mouth. It's really hard to imagine the guy we see now from the guy who is an ATG. Like two completely different people.
:happy:happy:happy I too count myself as a massive, eternal James Toney fan. And I agree with every single word of your post. The retirement of this great, great fighter is now long overdue.
1 - cool avatar. 2 - Track down James Toney vs Iran Barkley, Michael Nunn and the first fight with Mike McCallum if you can. Toney was a truly elite level fighter in terms of skills in his day.
