James has faced a who is who in every division he's fought at, except for the Klits at HW. So his opinion should count a lot. Mike McCallum is very underrated, the first two McCallum-Toney fights were classics - if you wanna see true boxing skill go watch these fights. I can understand Toneys picks for every category here, the only exception being that Roy Jones is a better fighter overall than McCallum. We all know that James doesn't like Roy. But when it comes to best jab, smartest and best pure boxer McCallum is probably ahead of Roy. I find it more surprising that James also put McCallum ahead of Michael Nunn in the best jab and best pure boxer categories.
That's a good list; then again I usually like to go by what the actual fighters say moreso than fans because given the choices, I'd rather put more stock in the opinion of the guy who was actually in the ring fighting them.
I thought James And Roy buried the Hatchet, When Toney fought Ruiz Toney went over to Roy and shook his hand.
Exactly what I thought when I read it. Nunn was also well ahead in their fight before he got KO'd. How the **** can someone who he beat twice on points and drew with once go down as better than Jones in particular who totally outclassed him.
But in what category? Jirov was a very good fighter, but the only category he might get considered is best puncher. I guess he'd be the #1 candidate if there was a category 'most durable fighter'
Toney was totally weight drained against Jones. In Toney' mind, Jones is a great fighter but is overrated. That is his believe whether you agree or disagree.Toney fought McCallum when he was 100 per cent and got all he could handle. On the basis of the McCallum-Jones fight, I am not so sure Jones would have beaten Prime McCallum. So I do not think Toney is totally out of line here.
