Was having this argument with a friend at the weekend, I think Toney eats him alive...literally if we're talking in 2019 but my friend disagrees. Who you say wins?
If were talking pure skill level, the fight wouldn't be close. Toney was on a higher level than Alvarez. But which J.Toney would show up for the fight though? If the lackadaisical Toney showed up, Alvarez out hustles him for a dec win.
The best version of Toney wins going away. Canelo is a class fighter though and it wouldn't be a beat down more a competitive but clear UD. If the Tiberi/Sanderline Willliams version turns up then he loses for sure. But Toney in shape with his head in the game has a higher ceiling than Alvarez in my view.
LOL please. If it's the best version of Toney, it's not a difficult fight for him. Clenelo isn't in Toney's class, despite what the hype has fooled people into believing. If Toney is at 100%, his toughest opponent is the judges, not Clenelo. But to be quite honest, Clenelo might not see the distance against Toney.
Canelo's skill level is being vastly underrated. A couple shoulder rolls and lead rights off a hook feint don't make you a genius. Especially when Dave Tiberi, Sanderline Williams and Merqui Sosa are running you on the rails. Toney just wasn't that dominant at 160. Canelo is pretty damn solid and consistent. And again, he has excellent skills, both on offense and defense.
While Mike was in the can, Chavez fought Mitchell, Tony Lopez, Pernell, Randall x 2, Camacho, Haugen, undefeated Holligan, Alli on a roll and Medrick on a repeat. That's not exactly soft matchmaking.... especially considering that Julio a few years past his peak.
