The Toney that came in against Jirov would beat Holmes. Too skilled, too good, even with the weight disparity. I always say the same thing about Holmes, I know, but I think this is the truth: Holmes has gone from the most underrated world heavy champ to the most overrated over the past five-to-10 years.
I think Toney could win a few rounds in this match up. He sure as hell isn't getting knocked out. If he came in as he did against Holyfield he would stand a good chance of out foxing Holmes.. Of course i would pick Holmes in a UD though.... Toney would make it close... man has a lot of heart and is a tough competitor
Cheers. But think about the Holmes hype of recent years. Everyone was going on about how overrated he was and now he's regularly on top five all time heavy lists. It has become almost heresy to dispute Holmes' greatness, even though Tyson's meteoric rise, Holyfield's epic battles and Lewis' resolve and technical abilities have been arguably more impressive achievements since. Then think of all those great fighters who preceded Holmes... always these extremes - Tyson, for example, was the baddest man on the planet, now many refuse to acknowledge the feats that were his astonishing rise and the almost as impressive snare of world titles upon his return. Anyway, here's why that Toney could win this: compact slick style with great defence. Attacking enough at the cruiser point of his career to land on Holmes. Toney's chin holds up at heavy - though I admit that Holmes is more heavy handed than anyone Toney has fought inc Peter - which would be vital in this fight as he wouldn't be able to avoid Holmes' jab as often as other fighters.
James Toney wouldn't even beat Eddie Chambers or Michael Spinks, let alone a prime Larry Holmes. Larry Holmes has dealt with all types of boxers from hard punchers such as Cooney, to boxer/punchers like Norton. Toney would be no problem for Holmes.
You see? It's heresy to think that Holmes was anything but a god... I'll be honest, I do think Holmes wins this fight - but not at all easily, he struggled with fighters less well-equipped than Toney - but I am fed up with the Holmes was a genius thing.
