........I'm a Toney fan but c'mon.....are we serious? Toney's best days weren't at HW first of all. Larry Holmes would batter him
Saying Holmes beats Toney is hardly elevating him to god-like status. Larry was involved in 25 title fights at the weight. You are going to have an off night once in a while with over that kind of time period. If you are going to focus the handful of average performances he had, then do the same with JT. Toney struggled with and lost to guys with 1/1000th of the ability Larry had even on an off night. Not to mention the stylistic problems Holmes presents Toney and the stylistic differences between Toney and the guys that troubled Larry. Holmes shishkabobs the tubby roida all night in his jab and takes a fairly comfortable decision.
Perhaps the greatest thing ever caught on film. Ive lost count how many times Ive watch this. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-XVCW95nHU[/ame]
Whatarock: Remember, I'm talking about the Toney of the Jirov fight. The one year in just about the past decade that he took the sport seriously. That Toney was a bit closer to the weight of some of the guys that Holmes fought. what's that? 10 pounds or so off Spinks, about the same off Weaver. And I'm not saying that claiming Toney loses to Holmes is elevating him to god-like status - I'm saying that describing Holmes as anything but a boxing god is heresy. So many people now believe that Holmes was that good. I don't think he was. However, point taken aout the odd off-night over that time period.
James Toney is my favorite fighter of all time by a country mile but no ****in way he beats Larry Holmes.
It was clear Toney was, how should I say, bending the rules during that period of time. How good was he really in that year? Who knows?
The Toney that fought Jirov would give Holmes a go at points in the fight. But Holmes jab would overwhelm Toney and win a clear UD. Holmes isnt a stupid swarmer that Toney feasts on. He'd pick Toney off intelligently against the ropes not leaving himself open to be countered.
