I can't remember a fight in the UFC when a ref. has lifted a fighter's arm. They usually just talk the fighter and ask them to show that they're still awake (talking back, waving free hand, moving body, kicking feet)

What will Couture's strategy be to get close to Toney to take him down without shipping any punches?

Does he just bumrush in close to the ground and grab his legs or what?

Hope and a lack of knowledge of MMA has led me to believe it'll end Toney winning by KO!

It's left for me to take the moral high ground...I'm a pugilist die-hard so won't even entertain the notion of watching this gimmick in which the chairman of sodomite masochism is pimping out one of the sweetest practitioners of the sweet science in the last 20 years...Why James? Why?

I don't need MMA in my life fellas, i realise the old game is not having it's best spell under the bright lights, but I can still reminis, look through the archives and enjoy watching scientists like Canto and Sweet Pete methodically break down maniacs or the pure genius of Bernard Hopkins systematically take the money 2, off the blinder 1 jab, and cross them off (vs. Pavlik and Krispy Kream Wink which i watched yesterday)

I prefer to watch the "chintucking" and crossed armed defence of the Old Mongoose...Btw did y'all know he would eat dinner with his chin tucked so it become a creature of habit? I prefer to salute artists like Ivan Calderon who doesn't give you the same look twice, or youngsters still repping the old game like Andre Ward giving out hip shots on the blindside of the ref so he can't be warned lol

Looks like i'll have to make do with Calderon vs. Segura this weekend.

    Absolutely nailed on.

(I'll still watch the Toney fight too though, curiosity more than anything else)

Nobody really knows. Couture actually has solid technical boxing by MMA standards, and he tends to use it to set up his takedowns. He's a greco-roman wrestler so he likes to hold his opponents and wear them down before going for a takedown. Often this will involve pretty good dirty boxing - he has a very nice short uppercut. Problem is that holding Toney let alone opening up to punch him while in the clinch risks Toney catching him on the counter. So one would assume that he will shoot for the takedown from distance. Problem is that's predictable and should make it easier for Toney to defend/counter. If you want to read a bit more about Couture then I've written a column at http://insidefights.com/2010/08/24/introducing-randy-couture/ which tries to explain to boxing fans who Couture is and how he fights.

Frank Mir - Cheick Congo fight was the one I was thinking about:

Ref lifts Congo's arm and gives it a shake at around the 2.05 mark.

It will last about 30 seconds either Couture will take him down and mount him and do something MMAish to him or Toney will spark him as he charges in.

    Hopefully the latter.

As an MMA fan I will say that Couture is an MMA equivalent of Toney when it comes to most things. Randy is very old and clearly past his best. He has tons of experience and wins most of his fights with solid gameplans. Both fighters found success in their sports above their natural weightclass. Both fighters are clearly at the end of their careers. Both are Hall of Fame fighters.

James toney's inside fighting is the key and how will couture attack him knowing one shot could probably kill him.If you go back to sports science and look at the fact that lucia riker hit's harder than houston alexander and he's a heavyweight in mma,it's a fact that boxers punch harder than mma fighters.Couture has all the heart in the world, but in order for him to win he would have to go into the fire, because not even liddell has the pin point accuracy or punching power that toney has. They better have the medical unit and emt's close by,because a hard accurate puncher like toney with 4oz glozes is deadly.

Were James Toney to get a KO, it would occur in the 2nd round.
