Valdez by decision, in an awesome middleweight war. I think his huge power, alongside comparable skill and class as a 160lber, make the difference.
We would have to be talking about a very prime peak Rodrigo Valdes, of Colombia. A prime Valdes that knocked out Bad Bennie Briscoe, on May 25 1974, in round 7, for the vacant WBC World Middleweight Title in Monte Carlo, Monaco. This title declared vacant after Carlos Monzon did not agree to a mandatory title defense. That Rodrigo would encounter a very tough fight against a game James Toney, who is very talented. This fight would go to the officials scorecard, with Valdes scoring a close but unanimous decision win. Valdes had a good defense, fires quick combinations in this fight. Toney would be respecting that thunderbolt right cross that put many an opponent to sleep for the full ten count. The only draw back for Rodrigo is that he tended to suffer from brittle skin above the eyebrows at times, which he does in this fight.
Damn, guess I'm in the minority picking James. I'm a big Valdez appreciator, but this would become a battle of two counter punchers positioning for opportunities. Toney, the superior counter puncher, takes it points, imo.
This one is close , something nags me that a peak Valdez beats Toney, anybody that can take out Bennie Brisco is dangerous
