Why do some fans say Calzaghe was a slapper?

Both of them at their absolute best (Toney from the Barkley fight and Calzaghe from the Lacy fight) I'll pick Toney without hesitation.

I’m undecided. I can understand why people are picking James Toney to win ( and he might have. ) but the man wasn’t impervious to being outboxed and Joe Calzaghe was a quick dude with good skill and high work rate.

Pacquaio threw over a 1000 punches against Margarito and Clottey. . He threw only half number against Marquez 3 and even less against Mayweather.

Saying volume beats one of the greatest counter punchers ever is just silly.

As I said in the other thread Tonry beat elite world class Southpaws like Jirov, Nunn, Johnson, who all have some similarities to Calzaghe in regards to awkwardness, volume and speed.

For me Toney wins a decision I think people forget how sloppy Calzaghe's defence could be getting hit consistently with right hand counter punches which is Toney's best weapon. Just look at the Reid fight Reid couldn't miss with right hands, and rocked Calzaghe consistently throughout the fight.

Surprised people feel so strongly for Toney. I was a fan, but I think this would be a tough fight for him.
Calzaghe threw a lot of punches and James could be lazy. Joe also had a great chin himself.
My verdict: Calzaghe wins a majority, or split decision. Toney complains all Calzaghe did was throw pitty pat punches that he mostly blocked or landed on gloves, and that he landed the heavier shots.

Jirov who is also a Southpaw threw over 1000 punches vs Toney, and Toney had no trouble countering and keeping up with him. Throwing a very solid 800+ punches himself and showing great stamina in 12th round and this was at Cruiserweight aswell.

Yes, but I think Calzaghe was better than Jirov.
