If that did happen James would be within his rights one of scoring factors is of course “damage done”
You could also say Toney was better than 43 year old Hopkins and Reid who both consistently landed counter right hands on Calzaghe all night. If Hopkins was a bit younger and more fresher with a bit more energy levels that he had in his 30s he probably wins that fight. I think Calzaghe would give Toney alot of countering opportunities who's defence could be very leaky at times.
I like Toney by decision. I think he's nicely suited to this match at his best. If Joe was a mover i'd be worried.
Nine times out of ten I would take the best version of James Toney to beat Joe Calzaghe but I get why a lot of folks like Calzaghe and his fast hands and work rate. I think Joe would have some success but ultimately, he liked to overwhelm guys with his combination punching and that's a mistake against a guy like Toney who was one of the greatest counterpunchers ever. At the end of the day, if Calzaghe fought the Super middleweight version of Toney that was weight drained against RJJ he would likely win but we are not talking about that guy. The best version of James Toney was a superior fighter.
