Hey RD no offence taken, I was just asking what you meant, sometimes terms can be mixed up for example “rolling a right” is sometimes what people say for weaving it instead of using the shoulder etc, I could’ve misread. I just wanted to be clear. Also for clarity the version of Toney I’m using here is the version that fought Holyfield or the late cruiser version which absolutely is open for a strategic debate especially when Frazier in the second fight with minimal movement, shot, fighting very uncharacteristically caused him so much grief GF was at the end of his stamina in that bout form what I noted… I should’ve put in the OP which version doe I’m seeing a lot of guys talk about the Peters fight when he was I think like a 240lbs hamster. I do have a “cob” for Foreman I guess, in the same way you would if say a guy you thought wasn’t very good is overrated, I actually really respect him as a fighter it isn’t some seething dislike of the person or anything. I put this thread up because it’s an unconventional take I wanted to debate and I know how popular Foreman is here - but for now I have Easter eggs to hide (I’m from AUS Timezone etc) hope you have a great long weekend / Easter mate we’ll resume later if you’re keen.

Have a good Easter mate. I wasn't trying to offend. I enjoy reading your posts here and I do like seeing unconventional takes.

Honestly, it’s not even close, Foreman would beat the brakes off Toney over 15 rounds.

Toney’s a brilliant technician, great defence, incredible inside skills, top-tier counterpunching, but physically he’s completely outgunned here. We’re talking about a natural middleweight/super middleweight moving up against one of the most physically overwhelming heavyweights in history.

Foreman in the 70s wasn’t just wild swings and brute strength. Yes, he was crude at times, but he had serious timing, a devastating jab when he used it, brutal uppercuts, and a level of raw physicality that would shove Toney wherever he wanted him. Even a defensive genius like Toney isn’t slipping and rolling everything when 220+ pounds of raw power is clubbing him around the ring.

And it’s not like Toney had prime heavyweight legs either. He didn’t move much at heavyweight, he stood in the pocket, caught and countered, and that’s the absolute worst place to be against Foreman. You need legs, movement, and clinching strength to survive 70s George. Toney had the toughness to last for a while, sure, and he’d make Foreman miss a bit early, but eventually he’d get battered down physically.

Foreman would just walk through his counters, bully him into the ropes, and hammer him until the referee or the corner stopped it. Might take 5 or 6 rounds, might take 9 or 10, but over 15, there’s no way Toney stands up to that kind of pressure and size without getting seriously damaged.

Toney’s skill would make it competitive for a few rounds, he wouldn't get flattened instantly, but Foreman's raw physical advantages are way too much to overcome.

You raise some good points. But I still think Foreman's enough of an ATG to overcome his physical and size disadvantages against Toney. He was a plucky little heavyweight. He'd find a way.

:D Well… I’m coming back to this thread because @roughdiamond deserves a good debate but just a short point here… have you seen how much minimal movement affected George? In the 2nd Frazier fight he was at the end of the rope for stamina… a shot, old fat Frazier fought way out of character and George was swinging at air till the 5th… does that not count because it was after Ali like every chink in the armour? Frazier was bending at the waist which has 0 benefits and opens you up to uppercuts (George’s key punch there) where as Toney is pretty much unavailable for uppercuts with how he fights and George does… not that he couldn’t be hit by them just not by those ugly long uppercuts or by guys who get square on the inside… Toney FAT around 230-240lbs hung with a super conditioned 240lbs (ish) Rahman putting out around 80 punches a round for 12… terms of power he’s as hard a puncher as GF or the difference would be oblivious to the person being punched, better conditioned, stronger and 25lbs heavier likely on PED’s and he couldn’t get rid of JT… His corner wisely steered Rahman away from chasing even that version of James to the ropes because he was being lit up, James wasn’t moved around by pretty much anybody at HW Rahman, Peters and Holyfield (whatever he was at the time he was still strong as an Ox) could do basically nothing expect jab lol. We can all pretty much agree that Foreman ain’t getting rid of James, surely, Peters fight and Rahman fight make it hard to argue otherwise especially considering the state of James in them… but no one will comment on how tf George makes it to round 15? James early HW and CW takes him deep once he realises he’s trying to shoot his load and beats him into quitting.

Until you pointed it out, I hadn't realized Rahman was close to Ibeabuchi's punchstat record versus Toney.

You really just couldn't volume punch that guy to death, could you?

Well there you go! So what’ve we learned…? A hard punching SHW who matches a near record holding HW punch stat couldn’t get rid of a 240lbs “Big” James Toney that didn’t show up but the guy who was 217lbs in his prime and almost spent against a shot Joe Frazier (5) Ron Lyle (5) and Muhammad Ali (7ish) is going to stick around being counter punched, having his body raked every time he shoves and smothered till the 15th against a 215lbs “in shape” “Big” Toney?

It is kind of funny. In four fights against two punchers larger than (and with better stamina than) young Foreman, an obese, aged version of HW Toney loses once decisively, gets a narrow SD loss, wins one as a TKO 3 that's later reversed by bureaucracy, and gets a draw in the other. In zero of these fights was Toney seriously in danger of being stopped. Both opponents were top contender / belt holder level. One a former lineal champion.

With that background, I do see your point that it's a little strange to expect Foreman to use his strength and power to run over Toney and KO him. Out-physicaling Toney and beating him down didn't produce any stoppages against him. And Foreman turns back into a pumpkin many rounds earlier than Rahman.

“Loss” against Peter’s too… lol look he could’ve lost all those fights before someone cries about it, it’s what happened in those fights that matters this is Big James country now, title of “Big” has officially been lifted.

If Foreman wins, it'll be because of the kinds of things @roughdiamond was pointing out. Not because Foreman is too big, too strong, and too hard a puncher for the little "middleweight" who's actually heavier than Foreman,* on steroids, and who weathered four fights against bigger guys than Foreman (where the only stoppage across those four was the accidental one Rahman scored on himself.)

    * [or about the same weight when in shape]

Who’s your favourite so I can make a thread dedicated to “Big” Toney bashing them to bits you traitorous rapscallion! No but @roughdiamond has made some good points but you’re no less a Brutus.

Oh, I already gave my prediction. Foreman is a plucky little heavyweight, and I think he finds a way to overcome his physical and technical limitations against Toney. Just like Marciano.
