Toney won fights because he set traps, but Hopkins would probably ruin that for him by making it really ugly.
Haven't seen Toney vs Mc Callum. You have inspired me to see if I can search it up and watch it. Will get beck to you on this question, but I think what I posted above covers it.
Toney was wildly inconsistent at MW but was the better fighter and IMO has by far the better wins at MW over Nunn and McCallum than Hopkins. To be fair though I think Bernard's run at MW is a little underrated and Oscar and Tito were solid wins that I believe he was the underdog for.
Have to go for Hopkins, as good as Toney was in the McCallum fights and the rest of his career, he was never that convincing as middleweight champ/contender- too close a call with Johnson, Williams and Sosa, struggling vs Nunn before the excellent KO punch and a stinker vs Tiberi. In this fight I think Toney would force the fight more and the more patient Hopkins would be glad to pick him off, something I see happening more often than not. I was initially going to go for him by a 2-4 margin but using JT from the Mike Mc fights, felt it'd be closer, so Hopkins by SD- just a bit better at 160.
The answer really depends because both he and Bernard (especially Bernard) really evolved during their tenure. The Bernard that lost to Roy but beat Mercado would lose to the Toney that beat Nunn, drew with Mccallum and "escaped" Reggie Johnson. But the Bernard that beat Tito, Keith Holmes and Joppy would probably beat that same James Toney. By then he had evolved into more of a mover and elite boxer/puncher. But then if you take James Toney at SMW and say he wanted to drop in weight to fight Bernard (and actually could), that Toney IMO would beat any version of MW Bernard. That's why it really depends, which Bernard and which Toney are we talking about..........
I kind of agree. At 168 Toney wins.At 160, it is an even fight both at their best,I just have to favour Toney by SD at 160 because he got the nod in close calls at 160 whereas Hopkins did not. Hopkins may land more punches but Toney would land the harder cleaner blows.Judges tend to favour the latter
I agree, the press conference would be more entertaining, they could call it “The Storm before The Calm”.
At middleweight I see another close decision fight, maybe with Toney taking it. Bernard was a little behind Toney at that moment in their careers. On the other hand, James had some close shaves at that weight so it's possible if Hopkins moves and boxes on the outside, he could win a decision. James is the better inside fighter though. Would be good. I see a close, hard to score fight with James winning.
