James Toney vs Billy Joe Saunders @160

I recall he gave crap to Toney for some a sting of fights after winning a title. Of course, these fights, I think about 7 or so, took place in the span of a year. Yes, he hates that James Toney was a highly active fighter I guess... Oh Failey...

 

Isal...at some point you're going to have to realize just because you won a belt, that doesn't elevate you to a major level. A belt does not make a fighter worthy. The fighter gives the belt value. Especially in this day and age when there are 4-5 belts per division., 3-4 from the same boxing org, and mandatories that you can easily skip over. IMO, Lee was a much better fighter than Lemmie.

 

People are funny. Now Saunders gets over hyped for beating a guy that Rubio and Alcine beat. A guy that was clearly out of shape, and not really that good to begin with. Lemieux was overhyped for beating that bum Stevens.

 

I realize that Lance. I've been saying how Lemieux gets vastly overrated for a long time. Even made a thread about it.

I would say he really started getting overrated around the time HBO started hyping him for the GGG fight and especially after Golovkin beat him.

It took James Toney 2.5 years to fight a world champion and dethrone Michael Nunn in his 27th fight.
It has taken BJ Saunders 9 years to accumulate 26 fights and still has not fought nor beat a world champion.

 

James Toney fighting at his best weight would be way too much for Saunders. I do wonder if we are getting a little carried away with his performance against Lemieux, id like to see him do the same to somebody a bit more mobile and a bit less basic. No offence to the Canadian cuz i love how he fights.

Yup, and in regards to Saunders, he did what he was supposed to do. That doesn't erase the shitty outing against Monroe, the fight before. It looked like Monroe was just there for the pay check. The rounds Monroe tried to fight, he won. The rounds where Monroe laid back and did nothing he lost.

 

And yet...his title is what you just said lifts him last the other guys. Ok....

 

Without an ounce of doubt, his title is what lifts him above Eubank and Lee. Remove the title from Lemeiux and they all very similar in terms of resume. I have said nothing regarding skill.

 

Am I missing something? Didn't Saunders get his WBO title beating Lee. Is it because Lee won a vacated title rather than beat a reigning champion?

 

Funny...I would think skill is a HUGE factor is something like this, rather than looking at empty titles.

 

I don't know about you, but I've watched enough boxing to know that skill is best gauged against quality of opposition.

How can I rate Eubank or Lee higher than Lemieux when neither has done more than Lemieux.

Don't take me wrong, It is my opinion that Eubank is for sure more skilled than Lemieux, and I would favor Eubank over Lemieux, but considering their resumes are not much different in terms of quality opponent, I would rate Lemieux slightly higher in terms of accomplishment since he did hold a world title, even for a minute. When Eubank proves he can capture a world title, then I will be able to say 100% with certainty that he is not only better skilled than DL, but also on par or higher in terms of accomplishments, depending on who and how he wins.
